    Re: help with taming budgie

    Hi Animal Girl.

Welcome to the frenetic life if being a budgie owner (or being owned by your budgie, as the case may be.)

How long have you had your budgie? If you have only just gor him, he needs time to get used to his new surroundings. If you gotbhim within the last 14 days, don't put your hand in his cage. For him, that is his safe place, if you nvade it suddenly he will not be relaxed.

To hand tame your budgie you must first let him approach, an idea is to use a stick to train him to step-up before using your finger. And don't force the contact, hold millet and let HIM come to YOU or he may feel threatened and that could make finger training him more difficult.

If you have had him a while but have only just begun finger-taming him the same-rules apply but even more so: to Perry you are suddenly acting oddly and getting closer than he is used to,

The by-word for this is PATIENCE: You cannot expect him to suddenly be hand-tame: it takes time, months and months of it at the least. Here is a site that tlks about hand-taming: give it a go!

    Hope this helps,

    ArticunoGail.

    Re: help with taming budgie

I'm also in the in "slow" process of trying to tame my budgies. I've had them for a few months now and they are still under a year old. Whenever I put my hand into the cage they both run from me. I have to follow them around (which I know is a bad idea) until one of them perches on my hand or finger accidently and then I quickly take them out. Once I have them out of the cage, they'll sit on my finger for a little while and they seem interested in me when I talk or whistle to them, but they get spooked very easily and will try to fly away if I make any movements to try to touch them. I haven't tried using millet so that is something I am going to try. I'll see if I can get them to come to me by using millet to lure them to my hand. I think they know by now that I'm not going to hurt them, but they are just very weary. It's going to take some time, but I think I'll eventually get there.

Good luck on taming your budgie! Keep us updated on your progress and if you find any tricks that work, let me know. I'd love to spend quality time with my budgies, too. I think the problem with mine is that I bought two of them and they have bonded with each other so I don't know if they will be willing to bond with me, too. I'm not sure if they are males or females yet (I'll post photos of them to see if anyone here can tell me). One of them is an albino and it's cere looks sort of purplish white, but the other one has a pale light blue-ish white cere. My albino is very small compared to the other one, so who knows.

    Good luck!

Thumbs up Re: help with taming budgie

Offer treats. Millet sprigs or "sprays" are a favorite treat, but don't feed too much of it (about 1/2" per day), as it is fattening like junk food. Avoid sweets or excess oats, both of which are fattening.

Try to interact with your birds daily for at least 30-90 minutes. Without regular and sufficient attention, they will lose interest in human interaction. A pair will tend to bond with one another and ignore humans, but through interaction, you can be considered part of the flock. A way to interact with your bird is to sing together, give it baths and if it seems to be rapidly dropping a mobile toy, pick it up. There is a chance it is trying to play a game with you.

Be conscientious. Parakeets are a lot of work but you will find them an affectionate and funny companion. Most will talk and how much they learn is really up to you. Be prepared to do some daily care, maintenance and offering of attention and time to talk and play with your birds, or consider getting another hobby.

Talk to it. Sometimes Parakeets get lonely. A good way to get them happy again is to talk to them. Also, to get them to climb up on your finger is to push a little bit on their stomach, and say "Step Up." By continuously saying that, they will start to say it by themselves, and will "Step Up" whenever they say it (which will usually be when they come to a stair/ledge).
