    First time bidgie owners..

Hello! We just got our first budgie tonight.

A young male named Ricky. [IMG][/IMG]

I just love the teal colors of his feathers! The pic is not too good though!! I cant wait to start training him. What is a realistic time frame to expect he will be comfortable in perching on my finger?

Hard to say when he will be on your finger. Bird appears young, healthy and rather calm. Just depends if he wants to be on your finger now or later. Takes a bit of time for budgie to trust you and feel comfortable on your finger. We humans are much bigger than a small bird. Budgies are easy birds to care for. Nice voices also.

i breed budgies and always tell people thathave one from me to wait till they have had the budgies fir 2 weeks ..before trying to finger tame them ...as in the first week there easy to pick up and they dont try to get away ..this is called stress...let them be calm for at the very least 1 week...but sit by the cage... talking calmly ..and lots of eye contact ...mimick going to sleep batting of the eye lids... then .... see if the budgie does the same ..if so keep your eyes closed for about 5 seconds ...it helps bonding ...
    i hope this helps .....
    regards ...mick..

How long it takes depends on the bird. Some birds warm up quickly, some do not. If it takes weeks or even months, don't be discouraged, though most birds it only takes a few weeks. Talk to him and get him used to you being near the cage, then you can work up to putting your hand in the cage, then offering treats - don't push him, if he's uncomfortable or runs, let him and don't pursue, that makes you seem like a predator to him. Just let him come to you (bribery works well).
