I'm a fairly new bird owner but from what I understand you can only tell by getting a blood test done.

Or feather sexing. I personally prefer feathers. It's like pulling a few hairs on your head (only hurts for a minute) the blood is more like clipping your fingernail too short, hurts like h%^^ every time you bump it for a few days. But that's just me.

The feathers you can submit yourself for 25.00 and it's done by www.avianbiotech.com I've used them for 12+ years.

Which feathers do you pluck? I've been thinking about doing this test for my sun conure but I'm worried about plucking the feathers, so I'm curious what area you pluck the feathers from.

I pluck 4-5 chest feathers. Just hold a few and pull quick. 99% of the time they don't even notice.

    @ TweeteBirds,

I finally sent in the feathers for dna sexing of Kahnee. Poor baby! I guess I'm not too good at it cuz he squawked for a second and now has a kind of bare spot on his chest. But, I think it only surprised him and didn't hurt because he forgot all about it when I was done and was acting like his old self.

They sure have a fast turnaround for results. Says 48 hours after they receive the feather sample they post the results. Can't wait!!
