Cockatiel Newbie?
Hi! I just bought my new Cockatiel yesterday and I have a lot of questions! First off, how do I tell how old it is and its gender? I have a lutino one and heard they're impossible to tell visually... I will give you some brief description of my pet and if you have a clue, please tell me what you think how old it is or what gender it is!
Ok, I know it's under one year old, because its leg band said '11' (2011), but is there another way to tell how old it is in MONTHS? Is there a difference in personalities for females and males? Because today is the 2nd day at his new home and he barely chirps. Also, he is super curious and active.
Now, here is the real problem; HOW DO I TAME IT? I heard it was raised as a baby and so it's familiar with humans. It's been playing with its toys and eating and is calm and healthy for the past 24 hours. Today, I sat down and talked to it for a few hours and tried to pet it. It scooted away and if I try too hard, it 'bites' my finger (although it doesn't hurt at all, more like a nibble)
I left and went back to check on it and when I approach, it clings on the bars infront of my face and occasionally climbs back and forth (it was so funny!) What does this mean? Is it happy that I'm here, or is it shooing me?
Anyways, so I was able to bribe it on my finger with millet and hand fed it, but without food, it won't let me come near. I KNOW it loves being petted on the head (the crest) because I accidentally petted it once and it was closing its eyes in comfort, but it won't let me whenever I touch it?
Also, I tried the step-up thing people were talking about. You know, get a stick and push its belly and then give it a treat and it should work out allll perfectly. Well, when I push, it seemed VERY unbalanced and fell. I didn't even push it hard, is it because its not balanced enough because its still young? Anyways, after that, it kept scooting away from my hand if I approach it.
So, I NEED HELP, PLEASE!?

Re: Cockatiel Newbie?
I had a lutino myself. They are beauties. The best way to determine the gender is to have blood done. Usually females are more sociable than males. Each bird has their own personality and in the past, I have seen males just as social as females. I recommend that you take it to an avian vet for a complete avian exam and have the blood work done so you know the gender of the cockatiel. It's going to take a week or or so for your new arrival to adjust. Some cockatiels take longer than others to get acquainted with the new surroundings. When I brought Piper (lutino) home, she was very docile and quite but it took her about 3 days before I even seen her eat anything and about two weeks before I seen her take her first drink of water. Just approach your new arrival slowly and speak softly. It took Piper about a week before she actually climbed right up on my finger. Your going to have to earn it's trust. What did you name your new cockatiel??

oh, I haven't named it yet! I was thinking of Pikachu but I guess it was a bit unoriginal. I'm still thinking about it
