Clipped or Flighted?
I'm about to become the proud mother of a 7 mo old Jenday Conure. The pet store I work out clipped his wings once he arrived at the store. I've been doing a lot of research and came across people that allow their bird to keep his flight feather and I like this thought. What I want to know is: Will it be hard for him to learn how to fly later than usual and what do you all think about clipped VS flight?
Thanks!

Re: Clipped or Flighted?
If they don't learn to fly before they are first clipped it can be hard for them to learn as the muscles aren't developed properly, so you may need to practice flying with him by doing "flappies" (sit him on you and bounce him to cause him to flap his wings for exercise). But at 7 months, that time is already passed. At this point it is merely what is safe for you at your home. Do you have a lot of people coming in / out, so an open door will be an issue of safety? Do you have predator pets (dogs, cats etc) that cause a safety concern in the home (there are two ways that can go - safer to let them be able to fly away from the predator, or safer to clip so they can't escape their room to get near the predator)? Do you have your home bird proofed, or are willing to do so (no toxic plants etc he could fly into, mirrors and windows covered)? Take a long, hard look at your home and decide which you think would be safest for your new companion.
I personally allow my bird full use of his flights, not even a show clip. But if safety concerns make that impossible, I would suggest clipping.

Re: Clipped or Flighted?
This isn't the place to ask for that, this is a thread of someone elses for help on their bird. If you want something done to your account, PM Dan, or post in the support forum.

Re: Clipped or Flighted?
He/she will probably still need to develop wing muscles... It's up to you but if your lifestyle includes people coming in and out of the house and your bird could fly out out of the house, I'd suggest keeping his wings clipped.

Re: Clipped or Flighted?
I have people coming and going, a 4 1/2 year old son, dogs and cats and a kitchen with a cathedral ceiling. As much as I'd love to see them fly, I keep them clipped for their own safety.

Re: Clipped or Flighted?
If your bird has already experienced flight it would be cruel to clip their wings.
