    Birdy First-Aid

I was clipping nails last night and accidentally quicked Dorienne pretty far down, so I was inspired while getting the bleeding to stop (when I wasn't feeling horrible, but I work with animals, I know accidents happen, especially with the wiggly ones). I don't know if there's another thread like this, but i thought it might be interesting...

Post your minor first-aid tips and home remedies for your fids.

Quicked Nails: all-purpose flour works the same as the expensive quick-stop powder at your local pet store. Take a small pinch of flour, apply it to the bleeding tip of the nail, and gently apply a small amount of pressure to "pack it in". You can also make a paste by adding a small amount of water to it if your bird is a wiggler like my lovebird, and sometimes that will stick better, it just takes a little longer to dry.

I use silver nitrate sticks I buy from the vet for that
I also have a supply of baytril at home (again from the vet and with the understanding that I won't use without consulting- but sometimes the vet is REALLY far away)
i also keep tweezers in the first aid tin, a topical soothing cream for minor ouchies, couple of syringes for medicating or re-hydrating, F10 (the disinfectant the vet reccomends- kills almost everything but is so bird safe it's actually used to treat some illnesses orally and through nebulising)
Plus stuff to make a collar coz Sammy picks at times
plus of course baby scissors and nail clipper- though we don't use them since getting a sandy perch

Thanks Lee for the adorable sig!

I once cut my budgies nail too far down on ACCIDENT but it didn't bleed for that long but after that I didn't want to clip any of my other budgies nails EVER again!
The nail was fine all it needed was to be rested and untouched and in about a few weeks the nail looked fine again.
