Wild Parrot Caught
Hello, my bro in law caught a wild parrot the other day at the police headquarters. What we want to know is what type of parrot it is.
He say it looks fairly young and it has a white ring around both eyes. I hope this is enough information until I get a picture.
So, what type is it?

Re: Wild Parrot Caught
The ring around both eyes could be a lovebird. Would need to see a picture to tell you what type it is.

They look like amazons to me.
Was he hurt? How/why did they catch him?
What's his story.

Thanks Lee for the adorable sig!

Re: Wild Parrot Caught
Both are Amazons. I am happy you were able to get him out of the tree safely and he is getting better now. My sister has a Amazon that looks just like the one in the second picture and his name is Mango... because he loves mango's. Mango is also aggressive right when you first meet him but he warms up to you after a little bit but he will still bite you if he feels like it so we are always careful when Mango is around.

Re: Wild Parrot Caught
If your Amazon is anything like Mango is he will take a long time to calm down and feel at home with you.

Re: Wild Parrot Caught
You should not hope to tame him very fast, or even fast.
Perhaps what I wrote in Understanding their mind can help you into a good relationship.
While I wrote for a CAG, everything there applied to all the birds I have had, from parrot to song birds as well.
And especially to wild caughts, as in the case of Riamfada and others.

Re: Wild Parrot Caught
There is no "taming fast" with a bird, you have to earn their trust and a parrot that was in the WILD will be traumatized, don't expect that trust to be easily given, they had to learn to distrust to survive. Take it slow and don't put the bird into a position that is uncomfortable, they will usually give warnings before they bite and they bite out of fear. Shanlung does amazing work with his birds so his stuff is worth reading.
My mothers grey came from the wild (well, wild of Florida, we think someone released him... couldn't find anyone missing a grey) and it is a very slow process with him, he takes scritches and talks etc but there is still a bit of distrust in him for humans.

Re: Wild Parrot Caught
If the new bird knows you are afraid of it the bird will bite you. I can walk right up to Mango and pick him up and he is perfectly fine but if I am hesitant to pick him up because he is acting like he will bite me he will clamp right down on my finger and draw blood every time.
Read some of Shanlung's journals and I know you will learn lots about how to bond with your new bird. He has a way with birds that is amazing and if he can get a wild caught songbird to trust and love him no doubt you can get a Amazon to accept you.

Re: Wild Parrot Caught
Marie,Deanna,
Thank you.
I fear the moment people wanted a timetable to go by, they invariably want to set the pace. And frustrate themselves and the bird in the process making it longer and more painful for both.
The pace must be determined and set by the birdie. But the moment the birdie knew that you will play by his/her rules, the bonding (I hate to use the term taming as birds are wild. You want a tame bird, go get a barnyard chicken) will be quite fast.
I detailed enough of my sagas with the birdies in my life.
Riamfada, a wild caught, flew to me on recalls in matter of a couple of days after being bitey with me at the beginning.
Yingshiong, Libai and now Jackie, ranged from a couple of weeks to a couple of months to fly to me on recall cues.
I never ever have to starve them.
You never know the background of your birdie. Some might have horrendous history behind them and you paying the price for that &%$#%^ jerk
in his/her former life. You need to let the birdie know you are very different. How long that will be cannot be known.
Andre, you might think talk is cheap, and I agree talk is cheap.
Try to find the time to click on my webpage in the signature.
I think you will be nicely surprised by the photos that you see. Each refresh will get different photos at random.
You decide if the path of bonding with your bird is worth the while.

Re: Wild Parrot Caught
Hang on- am I the only person thinking this bird should go BACK into the wild?
Is it injured in a way that being released will kill it?
If not find an animal centre or something and let the bird get released. This isn't some cage bred pet- this is a wild bird used to having the whole sky to play in. No wonder he's agressive. You've TRAPPED him.

Thanks Lee for the adorable sig!

Re: Wild Parrot Caught
Oooh, Helen, you know I didn't even pay attention to where they were from. I'm not used to large bird species like that being native. Just assumed it was a captive wild caught (as in escapee), not a wild-wild caught. But now that I looked up Guyana, Amazons are indeed native, hum.
If it was a wild bird, yeah keeping it isn't very nice to the bird. There are plenty of captive bred Amazons if that is what you want for a pet, but a wild one should stay free really unless there is some reason to keep it (broken wing, disabled leg etc) that would cause it to be nothing but easy prey in the wild.

Re: Wild Parrot Caught
Wow Helen I cant believe no one caught that they are actual native birds there. I just looked at the bird and thought of poor Mango out there getting hurt and didnt think it could be a true wild bird. I got to agree, if this bird can get better and released to live out his life outside where he belongs then you should not be trying to tame it and keep it.

Re: Wild Parrot Caught
I don't think you can find Lovebirds in Guyana so it could be a Macaw and i am pretty sure it is a yellow crowned parrot!
I hope this information helped!

Re: Wild Parrot Caught
That's the thing you can't he is wild bird, and probably will never be tame.
Or just wait for some time until your bird is calmer and talk to him for a week and give him treats in your hand but don't put your hand in!
