    Goodbye Sweet Kiwi

9 years ago I joined this board after bringing home baby Kiwi. For the past 9 years he has been a delightful bird for our family. Today we said a sad goodbye to him. Words can't describe how much he will be missed. He has been sick for some time and slowly wasting away. It was clear he had no quality of life and was in pain. I brought him to the vet to be put to sleep this morning...a very difficult choice but the right thing to do for my beloved pet. Lots of tears shed and very difficult for my 9 year old son who has spent his entire life with Kiwi as a pet.

Kiwi was the sweetest budgie who loved to sit on our shoulders, say words and phrases like, "Hello Kiwi", "Gimme a Kiss", and was just the best bird for the past 9 years. He will be so missed by our entire family. I told many stories and shared many photos of him on this board over the years. He even won a few photo contests here!

The avian vet gave us this with his little feet imprinted and one of his feathers. A very kind gesture on behalf of the vet clinic who didn't just act like "it's only a bird".

    RIP Kokomo...May 30th, 2009...Forever in my heart
RIP Kiwi.........Jan. 7th, 2012....Part of our family for 9 years and so missed

    Re: Goodbye Sweet Kiwi

Jodi, after losing a beloved budgie myself just before Christmas, I know how heartbreaking such a loss is, and it must have been more so for you as you had to make that decision, the right one for your bird, but that must have torn your heart. I am sorry for your loss, and can only hope that a mental image of Kiwi healthy and happy airborne over the Rainbow Bridge as he circles and soars in the sky, perhaps with other birds you've had, all waiting for that time in the future when you will be reunited.

And the little plaque Kiwi's vet gave you was a kind thing to do.

    So sorry for your loss.

    Re: Goodbye Sweet Kiwi

Jodi, I'm so very sorry that you have lost your sweet, precious Kiwi!! I just love the little plaque with his little foot imprints and feather that the vet gave you. You did the very proper thing by taking him to the vet to have him put to sleep. But I know from experience how very heart breaking it is to lose a little budgie. I lost my little Maxi who was 5 years old back in October, and I still am mourning his loss. Nine years is a very long time for a budgie that is domesticated to live, so I certainly admire you for giving Kiwi such awesome care over the years. Yes, budgies are very sweet, loving and unique little birds. I always say they are so "hardy", have such a loving personality, whether male or female, and truly become the "heart" of your home.

I completely agree with every comforting word that Gail has spoken to you. You sure will see Kiwi again one day as you travel over the Rainbow Bridge to "glory" . . and arriving in heaven!

    You have my sincere sympathy!!

I'm sorry to hear of your loss and it's probably even harder since your son knew Kiwi all his life. I can only thank the vet's clinic for giving you his footprints and a feather to remember him by; he was definitely not "just" a bird to them either. Hugs to all of your family.

Sorry to hear that you lost your long time pet Kiwi. Try to remember the good years before Kiwi became ill and passed.

Thank you all for your kind words. I just had to come post the news since I spent so much time on this forum over the years.

BridgeyRoo....thanks for you post. It is so nice to see a longtime member like myself who remembers my precious pair....Kiwi and Kokomo. They were quite a pair and brought us so much happiness over the years. I'm thankful for all the photos I have to remember them by. It would be hard to pick a favorite photo as there are so many!

Jodi my heart breaks for you and your family. Little Kiwi was a very much loved bird to lots of us here on Tailfeathers and his passing is sad for many of us. I loved the photos and stories of your birds and I remember back in those days trying to beat you with cute photos of boomer but your birds just were way to cute to beat. Bless your heart for taking such great care of Kiwi in his last years and knowing when it was his time to not fight anymore and to be put to rest. Even though it is hard on us left behind Kiwi is free now, without pain and only happiness. In time your hurting heart will be able to heal and you will forever cherish the memories of Kiwi and the life you had with him. Sending you many hugs and I am so sorry for your loss.

I hope your feeling better Jodi, it takes time when you lose a loved one.

So true Kathy, I find myself loving many birds here too and when they die it hurts our hearts even though we dont personally know them.

    Re: Goodbye Sweet Kiwi

Oh noo I'm so sorry for that. I remember Kiwi and Kokomo, they were always one of my favorite TF birds. I always enjoyed going through their pictures. You always got the cutest little pictures But, she went peacefully knowing that she was very loved. I don't think she could have had a better home.

The little foot imprint thing your vet gave you was very sweet- I wish all vets would do those kind of things, just to show they actually do care.

    Re: Goodbye Sweet Kiwi

Thank you all. Kiwi and Kokomo were a wonderful part of our family for many years. They were a wonderful and comical pair of boys. It is fun looking back at their photos and remembering. He leaves a void that's for sure and I miss his little voice saying "Hello Kiwi" and his woof whistling at me every day.
