My budgie has scaly face and the medication seems to be affecting his eye..

Hey guys, my budgie -Timmy- is being treated for scaly face for the second time (around his beak area). I am a little worried because his left eye is really red..is this a side effect from the medication? The medication is called 'scaly face and leg treatment for caged birds' and it contains Benzyl Benzoate and Liquid Paraffin. He does not seem too happy at the moment...but I think part of the reason for that is the fact that he hates it when I apply the medication on his face. I am hoping that the redness will decrease in the next couple of days as I have stopped applying the medicine but I will really appreciate it if someone can give me some advice on what I should do as I do not want to lose another budgie..I love Timmy too much! Thanks

I use Ivermecton on my birds for scaly mites, but if you only have 1 or 2 birds cost might be worth taking them to the vet for this treatment. One drop on the skin or orally and in 7 days the skin is cleared up.

The product offered through the pet store are oil based and can take 2 weeks to clear up scaly mites. PLUS the oil gets on the feathers and messes with the bird's abilty to regulate body temps.

Thank you for your response! I will try and find Ivermecton. He seemed a little better today as he was happy to do a bit of flying around the house with Joey. But I will see how he goes tomorrow as well. When you apply the medication on your budgies do they experience any redness around their eyes/get a little sluggish? Thank you once again!

The only place I know to get Ivermecton is at a farm feed store. Last time I picked up a bottle it was about $40. You must be at least 18 to buy this. It only comes in an injectable form ***BUT*** you do NOT inject it. YOu will have to get a small needled syringe it draw it out and ONLY put 1 drop on the skin at the back of the neck OR 1 drop orally. This means you MUST know how to properly restrain your bird in hand with thumb and forefinger around the head. Holding the bird in a towel makes it too easy for them to squirm and move their head.

No none of my birds get red eyes or sluggish when I medicate them.
