Recipie for a gluten free general seed mix?

I am looking to make my own basic seed mixes for a GCC and a tiel.

My husband has celiac disease and we have a little one on the way that may as well. We are taking our ENTIRE household gluten free (no wheat, barley, rye or their derivatives) including the pets to avoid cross contamination. Between the dog and the birds they are tracking gluten all over the furniture and us! The dog food I have figured out but all the standard seed mixes have wheat or barley in one form or another. Cracked, crushed, rolled, or whole it is still poison to this family.

Does anyone have a basic recipe for what seeds should be in a mix for a GCC and a tiel? I am prepared to do all the scooping, bulk buying, and mixing necessary (as well as our normal mix of fresh foods) but I want to make sure all the bases are covered. What about ratios for millet, sunflower, dried fruits, nuts, etc?

Has anyone encountered this problem before? Have you found any pre-made options?

    Thanks much!

So your birds are not on a healthy diet yet? They are not eating fresh veggies and fruits daily with seed being only a 2nd thought? If you have seed junkies it will take time to convert them - in many cases this can take up to 6 months.

Our birds get plenty of fresh fruits and veggies as I mentioned before. I ALSO want to make seed available to them in a form that isn't poisoning the rest of our family. I am mainly looking for what variety of seeds I should make available and in what ratios. I'm not worried about switching them over to a more veggie based or healthier diet because that is not what I am trying to do. Just hand mixing seed vs buying a pre-packaged mix.

    Thanks

Faith, just a little suggestion since it seems by your screen name that you have faith in a Higher Power who created us all. He created us all to be different. I trust that your husband has celiac disease because of a deficiency in his system. Wheat, rye and other gluten foods are NOT poison. As a matter of fact, they are essential to virtually all human diets - except if your system cannot tolerate it. I personally am severely allergic to peanuts. They would kill me. But, I won't deprive my birds of peanuts.

I'm certain you would never eat a live rat whole, but that's what is essential for snakes and some birds to eat (raptors).

I think you would be making a very serious mistake trying to deprive your birds of gluten.

Why not trust that He made us all to eat different things for His good reason and respect Him for his Perfect Plan? If you're interested in getting excellent seed, try asking the bird dealers around your area. I'm certain they can provide you with excellent suggestions.
