Brand New Egg
Hello! New to the forum. Cockatiel and lovebird mom.
Hello! I have just begun to have birds as pets about a year ago. I have an approx. 6 yr. old cockatiel Jasper and a 3 month old Dutch Blue lovebird Peachy. Jasper is like a grouchy old lady, she had hit her eye during a night fright before I got her, I don't think she was well taken care of and her cage was filthy, but it healed.. then she flew into a wall (she is slightly clipped) and hurt her other eye not too long ago. She is doing ok now. She does not like the lovebird at all lol. She is a bit jealous though I try to give her lots of attention. She will only allow head scritches. If I try to pet her anywhere else she freaks out still. She steps up on command and if she sees me with a plate of food she flies over and wants some. She is not very vocal, just some bleeps here and there. Peachy is my crazy little lovebird that has not gotten past the biting stage but we're working on it. She is stubborn as an ox but getting better. She goes after Jasper if she is out of the cage, so I have to watch her closely. I don't think she means her harm but she has jumped on top of her a couple of times. Peachy is quite a character though! I love having birds as pets instead of cats or dogs!!

Re: Hello! New to the forum. Cockatiel and lovebird mom.
Hi Angie and welcome to the community. Yes, all species/breeds of birds have different behaviors. You would think that they would all be alike, but that is just not the case. I know that lovies are biters. I've never had one, but have read lots of posts and info about them. From what I see and read, they are a very unique and active little bird. And they have beautiful colors in their feathers too! I have homed several tiels and many budgies in my lifetime. Right now I have one of each. Ollie, my little female tiel is almost a year old, and Muffin, my little male budgie is about 4 months old or so. Female tiels are not nearly as vocal as males are, so your little Jasper is making chirps normally. Very few females learn words. But they do like to chirp and whistle on occasion.
One suggestion I might share with you is that you could consider letting Jasper and Peachy out of their cages at different times. That way, you wouldn't have to worry so much about Jasper getting hurt, and little Peachy chasing her around, possibly causing her to be injured. It sounds like little Jasper hasn't had the happiest life before she came to your home. I truly admire you for taking her into your home and bonding with her and giving her true love that she never had in her little lifetime. It really is sad to read and hear about so many little birds that are not taken care of properly, or that are abused by their caregivers. No matter what pet one chooses, it is a "responsibility" that you take on when you get the pet. And it is not a job to be taken lightly at all. So thank you for taking Jasper into your home and loving and caring for her. I know you are best friends for sure! It sounds like you are making progress. No matter what, patience always wins out when it comes to training a little bird. See you around the forums! Hope to see pics of Peachy and Jasper one day soon!

Hi Maxollie and thank you! They are getting along a little better now and I put Jasper in a different area so Peachy can't get to her. I do have pics of them on my profile...
