    GCC bleeding

I was just changing the food and water for Peaches my GCC when I noticed what I thought at first was some splattering of berry juice around the wall. On closer inspection it seems to be blood that is coming from the front of his neck and he keeps on making it worse by scratching at it. I know they don't have a lot of blood in them and that I need to do something but I'm really totally unsure where to start. The last time my other half took a parrot to our nearest avian vet he suggested it was cheaper to have it PTS than try to cure it and that vet was over an hour away from where we live. I do have some cornflour and wondered if I should try and use a towel to get him out of the cage and put some of that on. As you can tell he isn't exactly friendly with me and hasn't been for a number of years. He will only allow my other half to touch him and right now he is at work so I'm trying to find out what I can do myself for now. Would it be worthwhile taking him to a regular vet who has no avian knowledge or is there a home remedy I can try. I have no idea at all if he's caught himself on something, the only thing I can think of that he would have caught his neck on is the coconut that he tends to sleep up against as it's a bit chewed at the edges, but never had a problem until today

Flour or cornstarch will work to stop the blood but if he keeps scratching it the cut will open back up. If you can find another vet I would take him to it or even if you need to take him back to the other vet if its still bleeding he does need to see a vet to get it sealed back up.

Thanks for that. I did manage to find a vet who claimed to be knowledgeable about parrots. He seems to think Peaches had an old injury as the area was scabbed up, something I hadn't noticed as it was right under his neck. The vet was pretty sure he'd been rubbing himself up against the coconut, so I've thrown that away and put his tent back in the cage. We've got some 'wound powder' that we have to put on him once a day. The bleeding has stopped and we have trimmed his claws and he definitely seems okay but I guess we are going to have to keep a close eye on him to make sure he doesn't keep opening the wound. The vet didn't seem to think there was a need to put anything else on to seal the wound up but quite honestly I am not very confident about any vets here with regards to parrots and their welfare.

I am happy you took him to the vet and they gave you something to put onto it. I hope it all heals up fast so you wont need to worry about him breaking it open again.
