    Lightbulb Bamboo?

My keets loooooove to chew the bark off the branches that are in their cage, but I have to wait for acceptable branches to get from the woods behind my yard since the ones out there are wet & I don't want to take a chance. There is a little wooden ladder in their cage & they chewed off the bottom two rungs! Anyways...

Is bamboo good for keets to chew on? I've heard they love it, and I've also heard it can splinter & cut up their throat. So which one is it? And if it's good, where can I buy some for cheap in MA or even grow some?

    Thanks!

I am not sure if Bamboo is safe for them to chew up but I did read about people using it for perches. They made shredder toys that you can buy fairly cheap from online stores and also at bird stores that my lovie use to love to chew up. My sister has a Amazon and she buys these rolls of something called Shredders that she strings up all around Mango's cage and he loves it. If you google "shredders" you will see what Mango loves so much. I also heard of people using loofah and cutting it into sections for there birds to shred. You can buy loofah toys but I think its easier and fun to make on your own. If you look in the toy section on this site you can find some great ideas of things to make for your bird to shred up.

    Re: Bamboo?

I've heard it's good for birds, some stores sell it for bird toys - but I can't speak from personal experience, I have never bought it for mine. Perhaps your vet would know if it has any health risks? They get a lot of magazines/articles/journals that go through the common dangers of the pets they treat, so might be worth asking.

Seagrass is a good thing for them to destroy and my tiel sometimes steals the rabbits wooden chew toys, which come bark-on and sterile, you could look into that - can get a bundle of safe wood for a few $ and for a keet, it would last a long time.
