I got an idea for training

Just thought I'd share an idea I got yesterday after having my first experience with a tiny parrotlet.

I just got Henry on Monday. He's 8 weeks old and is eating on his own. So, although he's finger-tame, he will fly off just for fun and to explore. I worry about such a tiny guy being on the floor. He goes beneath furniture and it's a nightmare getting him out without scaring him.

Sooo... yesterday, I found a puppy playpen. It's 8-sided and has mesh 'windows'. And, it has a mesh top that you can zipper close. I'm hoping to put Henry in there to teach him stuff like 'step up' and so he can get used to me. I plan on putting lots of toys in there so he can have fun.

Here's a photo of the one I'm buying:

Has anyone else used these playpens? If so, what's been your experience with them?

Never used them, but it looks like it would be fun for a bird to climb that mesh. My tiel came wing clipped, so I just used cardboard boxes to make him a play area on the floor and would lay on the floor with him and eventually got him to step up onto my hand for millet, so it would probably work.

I'm still trying to work with my 8 month old sparrows and today I realized I could work with them a lot easier in this playpen. So, I'm gonna give it a try. These tiny birds get into such hard to reach places that I'm not inclined to work much with them and it makes me feel awful. Now I might have some hope.

I think it looks perfect for a tiny parrotlet. So when are we going to see pictures of your Henry?

My camera takes really awful photos indoors but fabulous ones outdoors. I'm going to the repair shop to get it fixed. In the meantime, here's a blurry photo of my fuzzy baby Henry:

I bought him a tiny play gym to put inside the playpen - and a little hanging toy with beads, bell, knots, chain and wood blocks.

The dealer wanted to keep all the birds for a few days to make sure they were all eating okay, but he trusted me enough to let me take Henry home right away. Well, Henry spends 20 minutes eating, 5 minutes for a break, goes back to eat for 20 more minutes, another 5 minute break - all day long. Nah, Henry does not have a problem eating !!!

    Pat,
Henry is adorable!!! How long do you think it will take before Henry is weaned? I just love how fuzzy he is

He's fully weaned. The bird dealer said he wanted to keep the birds for a few days to make sure they were all eating fine. But he said he trusted me and would let me take one home that day. He also said the birds were not eating cooked foods.

Well, since Henry's been home, he eats for 20 minutes, takes a 5 minute break, goes back to eating for another 20 minutes, another 5 minute break - all day long! And, he eats seeds, pellets, millet, veggies, salad and cooked foods.

And, he started to sing to Justin Bieber's song Baby. (I play it every day for my birds)
