Budgie in the food dish?
I got a cute little male budgie a couple days ago and I've noticed he has a habit of sitting in his food dish and he seems to be "bathing" in the seeds. He flings seeds everywhere and flutters. I've caught him doing it multiple times and I'm not sure why.
Is this a normal little quirk for budgies? I don't think I've ever experienced this aside from my FEMALE cockatiel when she wanted to start nesting, but she'd sit and squeak to herself, then get up and go about her business.. he seems to be playing with the seeds and just relaxing in the dish.

Re: Budgie in the food dish?
Boomer slept in his food dish when we first brought him home and I finally made him a small bed out of a basket and hung it up on the wall of his cage with some leather straps for him to sleep in. It worked and he never slept in his cup again. I dont know why he is trying to take a bath in his food though?? Do you offer him bowls of water in his cage so he can take a bath? Or I also heard that some budgies like it when you get a big leaf of lettuce wet and either hang it on the side of there cage or put it on the bottom of the cage to rub there bodies on to bathe. Baby birds do the strangest things, but that is what is makes them so cute.

Re: Budgie in the food dish?
He does have a water dish the same size as the food dish. I think he's more playing than anything, but he might be defending the dish from his cagemate. He's not acting like he's being aggressive though. Just playful.

He sounds like a happy little bird and like you said he may just be playing in his food cup. It does sound like it would be cute to watch him flinging the food around, silly bird.

Re: Budgie in the food dish?
Young birds find comfort in sitting in the food dish. It's like the nest, so very safe feeling for them. If he is younger, could be the reason. And as for the throwing food... well, birds like to throw things and budgies are very playful.
