Mums is attacking chicks :( Advice please

    Hi All
those of you that saw my last thread I removed the Dad because I thought he was attacking his chicks. Turns out Mum is doing it too!

I have 5 chicks, the eldest is 23 days old and the youngest 13.

It looks like it is only the oldest 2 that are being mutilated. They have a lot of feathers missing and lots of cuts and broken feathers. I am assuming that it is overpreening but they look really sad. All of them have full crops.

What should I do? Should I pull them and handfeed?

I have a brooder and handfeed for emergencies, but I haven't handfeed chicks this young before.

Does anyone else have experience of this?

I figured it was the Mom. The hens usually do it because they want the babies out so they can lay eggs/breed again. I personally don't think there's anything you can do BUT pull them, otherwise she may kill them. That's my opinion.
Maybe someone else here has advice....

Are you still offering them fresh nesting material?
How old are they, how long and how did you condition them before breeding them?

Sometimes moving them to a shallow tray at the bottom of the cage will help, put some bedding in there so they dont get cold though.

Are you sure the cock was doing it also? If not, put him back he will help distract the hen.

If you know how to handfeed you could pull them.

I use to have a hen that would do that she would pull out the pins and chew on the feathers, I didnt have time to raise one lot but she raised them fine, but it was a big risk. I would look at hand raising them personally or if you can move them to the Dad not sure if you could do that since you took him away and moving him back may cause them to beat the babies rather then just chew and pluck.

Personally I would pull the chicks for raising if you have the time.

Huge thanks to Sam for the sig...2 Cats, 2 Dogs, 30 Lovebirds, 7 Cockatiel, 5 Greencheeked Conure, 2 Rainbow Loris, and fish. My birds

If you are not experienced in hand feeding, there's more risk of them dying through hand feeding than plucking ... just a thought.
