Special treats
We all have done our homework and know what birds can and can't have. We all know what to avoid and in most cases I'm sure our birds eat better than we do. I admit however, I give in and let Zeus have bits of not so healthy food, bad bad me! He doesn't get them often though and I avoid the toxic ones like a good bird keeper. Just little bits to make him feel included in mealtime as before coming to the man I got Zeus from he had eaten nothing but table scraps and only when his keepers had been eating.
I also use it to get him to try new foods. He sees me eating Cauliflower in my stir fry and all of a sudden he is willing to try it. But only if it comes from my plate. And only if it looks exactly like what I am eating. Note: I hate cauliflower and this bird did what my mother could never do- got me to eat it!
And I watch the fat, the grease and the salt and make sure I don't cook with anything that is poison to him.
Anyone else give special treats? I can't be the only one that give in to meal time beggings!

Re: Special treats
Have you tried giving Zeus scrambled eggs? I used to give it to Piper and Woodstock and they loved it.. Along with a little bit of wheat bread too.

Re: Special treats
He doesn't really care for eggs all that much. He will eat a little if I am eating them but that's it.

Re: Special treats
I've been making a ton of pumpkin pies... because my guys eat so little, and I can't let all that pumpkin go to waste! I've also been making zucchini bread and zucchini bird bread - sometimes I mix up the two when I grab a slice. We make a ton of salsas, and while the human food salsa contains lots of no-no things, we always make a bit of "Salsa Birdie" when making our salsa verde. Salsa birdie is pretty much all the green things, mostly peppers, thrown in the food processor - they think they have the same stuff we do, but it's a healthy treat!
