opinions on adding a Pionus
Hello all,
I'm considering adopting a female Pionus from a trust-worthy rescue organization in the area. I currently have a male tiel, and am hoping to provide him w/some company while I'm gone during the day. I'm aware of how to quarantine - I'm not really asking for "how do I", but more just for general opinions/feedback on adding this type of parrot to my household.
Thanks in advance,
Jenny

Re: opinions on adding a Pionus
There are a few members with Pionus parrots on the boards. They are supposed to be very charming parrots. Hopefully someone stops by soon with some info for you. They are a lot bigger than tiels though, so just be cautious with the two together if you do adopt her. Which type of Pionus is she?

Re: opinions on adding a Pionus
Hi Marie. She's a white-capped. She's a pretty thing, & from what I've experienced w/her & been told, she's very docile. I'd seen on another forum that Pionus had a reputation for going after smaller birds... Pionus owners chime in here... but the rescue org tells me that they've had this little girl in open areas around plenty of other birds & she's never shown that kind of aggression. I'll definitely take it slow & careful as I introduce her to my tiel, assuming I do proceed w/the adoption. Right now, the aggression rep is my biggest concern, & what I'm hoping to get a better feel for from this thread.

Re: opinions on adding a Pionus
I have a senegal and not quite a white-capped but part of the family. She is the only bird in my house so she does get jealous sometimes but it isn't usually presented as biting. They are known for having a large bird personality in a little birds body! So that helps with training! I owned a tiel before I got Ollie and they aren't that much bigger than a tiel but their beak is much larger/stronger. I wouldn't think it would be a problem to get the other bird. I would be concerned if it was the other way around and the pionus had already bonded with you. Just take it slow as you said and you will learn the new bird's body language soon enough. You will know if they will be alright together during play time. I would never cage them together though.
