Question How many of you regularly use supplements?

I've been reading a lot about herbal supplements and powdered calcium, spirulina, etc. and I was wondering how many people actually offer these to their birds regularly? I know a lot of bird owners will offer these things when the bird is sick or moulting but it seems they would benefit from having at least some supplements daily. And for those that do offer supplements regularly, which ones do you offer?

I never gave boomer supplements but I did buy him a herb salad that was a lot of really good plant and herb based things that were dried into a salad. He loved it and he would eat it on top of his sprouts or I could just put it in a bowl and he would chow down on it right out of the bowl. You can buy it here, http://www.twinbeaksaviary.com/herbsalad.html

My vet gave me a vitamin supplement to use for my tiel cause he's a tad picky about his veggies sometimes. If you are interested in a supplement, I would recommend discussing it with your avian vet cause some things like calcium it is bad if they get too much too often.

A friend of mine has piledrived two Valium into his two birdies drinking water because they seemed to be depressed. He says at the moment, they seem to be higher than two kites, looking right out into orbit. I'm not so sure he should have given them two Valium (maybe one) but two? Anyway, do you think this will bring the birds out of their depression?

No way, I would never give my bird a Valium. They have sensitive bodies and if you are not careful they could OD on them. Please tell him not to do this again, it could kill his birds.

Thank you for this help. The fact that the two birds, according to Jim, seemed to be half stunned as they stared off into orbit, seems to suggest in itself they were kind of high. I'll pass your advice on to him and let him know it could seriously hurt them.

He said just a bit ago, they were flipping around in their cage like they were totally out of it. Maybe they're coming down from their "high" and hopefully will gain consciousness enough to know what they are. I think he'll listen to what the experts say and not do a repeat on this.

Again, thank you for your help.

I am not a expert at all but I did need to give my bird lots of meds and learned that just a tiny bit of any kind of medicines can really harm a bird. I am happy you are going to talk about it to him because I would hate to see him hurt his birds.

The fact is, Jim's sister Druker is going to have a baby and he's so excited to see whether he's going to be an Aunt or an Uncle, he's not thinking straight.
At least Boomer Girl, you've had some experience yourself with birds, so your advice will be respected by Jimi. I know he'll listen to what you're saying. Thank you again.

I have given supplements to pet birds. Some of these supplements, I am not sure if they really were a help or not. Endless supply now of items for sale in pet stores for peoples pets.
