Lovebird Hates New Cage
I purchased a new cage for my lovebird hen and she hates it. She had been in it for three days and for three days straight she made her shrieking calling whistle. I tried putting her toys from her old cage in her new one and situated everything somewhat like it was before but to no avail. I finally gave up today and put her back in her small cage. She still called out for the first hour or two but she now seems back to normal and is not calling out every 5 seconds.
I'm not sure what to do, do I just give up on her new cage and let her live forever in a small one? I'm really disappointed by this.
Help!

Re: Lovebird Hates New Cage
I hate to tell you this but when boomer was young I tried to give him a new bigger cage and he did just what your lovie did and never got use to it. He was a known "sissy" bird so I didnt force it onto him and even after it sat next to his smaller cage for a month he still hated it. I ended up giving it away to a friend who was poor and needed a bigger cage for his two birds but I was lucky and didnt pay that much for it because I found it at a garage sale. Just keep both cages side by side if you can and keep her favorite foods in the new cage along with some of her favorite toys in it and hopefully you will have better lucky then I did. Also sometimes they are afraid of something in the cage and not so much the cage it self. I noticed if I put newspaper in my lovies cage he was freaked out by it because he was use to having plain white paper in it. The grates on the bottom of his cage freaked him out too because they were usually covered up. Or heavens forbid a new toy because he hated new things all the sudden in his cage. Lovies are funny about what scares them so look at the new cage and see if perhaps it could be something strange in it making her afraid and not the cage.

Re: Lovebird Hates New Cage
She's been back in her old cage for a few hours now and has been content, peaceful and even napping *sigh* My fear is she'll be like your Boomer and never get used to it. The grate on the bottom of the new cage is bigger than her old cage and it's more open so maybe she doesn't feel secure in it. Other than that there's nothing in it that would scare her that I can see although the cage is a different color, her new one is black and her old one is white.
I'll try what you've suggested and see what happens, thanks!

I she gets use to it sitting beside her enough to explore it. I put millet in the new cage here and boomer would go and eat the millet in it but the second I closed the door he freaked out. If you have lots of patience I would think your girl would get use to it once it became part of her environment. Our house is tiny and we didnt have enough room to keep both cages that long so that is why I ended up giving it to my friends birds.

Good grief was Boomer a lovebird or a chicken?

He was a tiny chicken in disguise. He was even afraid of his own shadow and would do the alarm call when ever he saw it somewhere.
