Thinking of getting a puppy & we have an 8 year old Cockatiel
Hello,
I apologize if this topic is on here but I couldn't find it so I thought I would post. My husband and I are thinking of getting a small breed dog and we have an 8 year old female cockatiel. We live in an apartment (2 bedroom) and there is a maximum in dog sizes (20lbs or less). I have read both "yes and no" opinions but the type of dogs those posts were referring to were about labs. I also read that Yorkshire Terriers were a good breed BUT aren't they a hunting breed? Yorkies are also considered barkers and I don't want to upset the neighbors. Any suggestions on a small breed of dog that works best to co-habitate with our tiel? We also would rather go through the pound versus a breeder. Even a mut is fine with us. BUT Lubin is our girl and the LAST thing we want to do is put her in a dangerous situation.......
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Melanie

I don't own a dog myself, but I have a friend who owns a small dog and used to own a cockatiel. They got along fine. The cockatiel even learned to bark like it! :3 I don't recall the exact breed of the dog, but if I find out I'll let you know. Here's a link that may be helpful:

Good luck!

Yorkshire Terriers are great pets. My relative has one that she brings with her when she visits me. Also, they are loving dogs.

Although Yorkshire Terriers are adorable and cuddly, I don't know if I would want one if I had a bird. This page has some links to some small dogs that have a low prey drive:

You might consider a small Boston Terrier. Raised with the bird from a puppy will most likely make it a good situation. I always recommend females for several reasons and usually I don't recommend shy or timid, but it might ease your mind. My miniature schnauzer loved the bird room, but she was well trained and made friends with other animals easily. She spent a lot of time at my friends house and once stuck her nose under a chicken that was trying to lay an egg. She wanted to know what all the clucking was about. She would also wait for the baby armadillos to arrive each day and gently tried to play with them. They ignored her.

Thank you for the dog recommendations. I'm going to research the Boston terroir a bit more. I found a BT rescue league in my area so I will keep that breed in mind. This is a big step for us so I want to make sure we make the right decision.
