    Budgie Blue

    Progress report for Budgie Blue.

She is doing very well I feel. Certainly looks good now.
The guys do have their moments but she seems to be able to stand her ground. I have only growled a couple of times to help keep the peace.

Here is a reminder of what she looked like when I took her in October 2013.

    And now these new ones.

You can just see two of her upturned toe nails in the last photo.

Amazing!! Simply Amazing!! I knew in my heart if anyone could give lots of love and care to Budgie Blue it would be you, Clive. And sure enough, the pictures speak a thousand words of difference!! Just goes to show you what lots of TLC, an excellent diet, and a loving home can do for a little bird! Thanks for sharing the update with us! Love the pics!

    Thank You!
Now here is an interesting thing.
Someone who I had a bit of a run in with claimed a birds feathers will not change condition as they are inert (dead as such) until it molts and new feathers grow in. And I had argued that that was not true as I have seen otherwise before with birds I have taken in. Remember Ricky.
I feel this sort of blows that theory out the back door. As Budgie Blue will not have got a complete new set of feathers in just 3monhts. And I did not scrub and polish her. And the photos have not been retouched.
    So what can we conclude?
I have been looking at the difference in her and she does look to be in super feathering right now. almost pure, she is so clean and every feather is in place.
From a sick motley looking little girl to a bird that is proud of her appearance.

Now this is what you called laid back.
I caught Budgie Blue asleep on top of a door today.

You would have to say she looks very comfortable and the woodwork fits her shape nicely.

Aww! She is looking rather "lazy" in that pic. Her feathering continues to lighten up, Clive. And it looks like she has more feathers than before. Has she had a hard molt recently? Of course, on some level, budgies are always losing feathers, even between molts. Looks to me like she literally is "a piece of the furniture"!

    Re: Budgie Blue

    Round four of nail trimming.

Before I go any further can I explain that when I started B.B's nails were starting to grow back into her flesh. You cannot just cut them hard back, so you have to trim a little, wait for the quick to move back, then trim again.
This is the fourth bird I have done this with. When I got Tweety my first Cockatiel I discussed what could be done for her deformed feet and long nails. He did not think it was an option. But I did it anyway and with great results.
Handicapped birds do not wear their nails down and all too often are left way too long before any clipping is done. In truth they do need be be watched and clipped regular.
Todays trim went super well and I did not have any real bleeders. Only one of her nails showed any sign of a blood spot, but did not bleed.
Here are a few photos of before this trim, while I had hold of her.

And after It has taken 7months to get them back to this length. But well worth the effort.

I also see she is having a big moult and there are loads of new pinnies coming in.
Something else I see is her nare is very dark and swollen. So guess she is coming into season as well.

    Re: Budgie Blue

I definitely can see a big difference in her toe nails. Budgie Blue is the most beautiful "blue" feather coloring I've ever seen. She looks to be very healthy and happy these days! Great job in rehabilitating her, Clive. You are a testimony to any one who might seek out a rescue. They definitely can be an asset to your flock, no matter which species, and like Budgie Blue can be very happy in their environment.

    Re: Budgie Blue

What I forgot to mention is that she has lost weight.
I have doubts I got it right the first time as if these figures are right she has lost 11g and that would make one sick bird I feel! And that does not seem to be the case.
She may have lost some weight due to all the flying she now does and the fact that she is pumping in new feathers.
She did not feel skinny in any way when I had hold of her. And as she is in heat I would consider her in good condition.
I will keep an eye on her and check her weight in a week, unless I see other signs that she maybe off colour. If that happens she is off to the vet.
She was flying alright yesterday when I was trying to get her with the dreaded net.

    Re: Budgie Blue

Well, it sure could have been the diet she had before she got to you. And also, if she was not out of cage flying free then, I think that also would make a difference. Did you ever tell us or estimate how old you think Budgie Blue is?

Age! Yes I should check that out.
She does have a ring on her leg so there should be a date of birth on it.
I am getting old and never think of looking when I have hold of her.
