Re: New adventure with Zebra finches

Two females laid eggs in the same nest, one egg of each female seem to be fertile, they stay together in the nest without fighting, it's the first time I'm experiencing this kind of behavior, I just hope one of the female will not kill the babies of the other.

This does not sound good at all. I too hope they all will .be happy together once the eggs hatch.

They are soooo beautuful. I will look for updates to see how this is going to turn out. A very stressful situation, for sure.

Those little finches are so pretty and cute! Such adorable tiny little creatures, they remind me of sparrows with their eyes and teeny tiny little bodies. I am glad to hear the two females in the same box are not fighting, did they both mate with the same male too? I really hope they do not ever fight or harm the young ones when they are born either.

Yes, the same male for both females, the good thing is the eggs of both females seems to be at the same stage of development so there won't be a great difference between each hatching

That is so strange they both have the same mate too. He is going to be one busy guy if the girls tolerate each other in the next box.

It is not unusual for a male to have more than one mate. I think in the wild males have many.

Re: New adventure with Zebra finches

UPDATE : as I said before, both female laid eggs in the same nest, but after verification "candling" the eggs of only one female are fertile (I know it because THIS female is a show female and its eggs are bigger than a regular female) so now I'm starting to wondering if it will not be a good or bad idea to remove the 2 other females

Yikes! That is a hard decision but I would maybe think removing the other two might be a good idea.

In my view, you just might have to move the other two females. Most hens are very protective of their eggs, and when you get several females together like these these, I suspect their will be fights or aggression between them.

The chicks have all been eaten .

Now I removed all the other birds, the pair started a new breed, 7 eggs all of them fertile but momma continue to eat them, luckily one of them seems to big to be eaten and is well fed, I don't understand this cannibalism and why, my joy to have this survivor chick is a bit darkened by this strange behavior!

That's horrible they eat the babies!! I have never heard of this before and only can imagine how shocked and horrified you are that this is happening. I am sorry Stephane. And a little disgusted and sick this is happening.

Re: New adventure with Zebra finches

I have a feeling this is a Nature happening, because, I had been watching a eagle cam on YouTube. The pair had two chicks. It was very hot where this nest was located here in the Midwest, and from what I read on line, there are flies in the area. If they get into the nest, they have some kind of chemical in them that kills the chicks. And that is exactly what happened.. And the mom ate one baby after it died, and then carried the second dead one away.

I hope you will have success the next time around. I am sorry this happened to your finch babies.
