Louise, I just left some thoughts about this problem on the other thread that you created. Perhaps you could read them, and then post your thoughts back to us.

Hi Louise, I am sorry to hear your budgie has a tumor. Was it a Avian vet you took him too? If not I would for sure find a avian vet to take him too because they do get infected preening glands and if this vet did not know birds well it could be just a infection and not a tumor. I really do not have any advice on how to help you if it was it a Avian vet who diagnosed it because if the avian vet said it was a tumor then it probably is. All you can do is make your baby comfortable and give him lots of love. When the time comes it is a hard decision but if you decide to put him sleep so he does not have to suffer in the end I would try to stay to stay with him when they give him the shot to put him to sleep. I have been there with my dogs and my husband and daughter were there for Boomer and I know my loved pets were happy we were there.
Fly Free Boomer, we will forever love you.

    i am so sorry honey.

How good is your vet? Because I could recommend you a VERY good one - although they're in London. They're called CJ Hall and they've been amazing for my little guy. And they've operated on some really tiny birds! (And I drive from Coventry for them - not as far, I know, but if there is a way you can make the trip...)

Maybe your vet would consult with them? Or you could send photos? I know it's a long way, but if I knew they could help, I'd make the journey. I suppose the question is whether they really could help. Is your vet a specialist? Because it might be that another could help if they weren't. Is it a lack of equipment/skills/knowledge - or just that they think it's not operable by anyone.

There's another good vet I've heard of in oxfordshire way - but I don't know them, so can't personally recommend.

Thanks Lee for the adorable sig!

Re: tymor on preening gland help

PS - I was told it's quite unusual - I was worried Sammy had one not so long ago, but it was an infection - a feather had grown impacted, and it was causing swelling and horrible symptoms. Fortunately it was just an ingrown feather - and that was excised (although it took a few attempts!)

How was the diagnosis made? How sure was the vet? How sure are you that the vet has given you the right opinion? Do you trust them, or is it despair making you question it? (which I totally understand?)

How sure are you about your fids age? 2 sounds young to me...

Thanks Lee for the adorable sig!
