Unhappy Help!! Babysitting lovebird for a month, and he hates me!!

    Hey guys,

So I recently agreed to baby sit my friends lovebird, Birdy for a month. It was very attached to my friend, let her rub faces with him etc. Now if I even bring my hand close to the cage Birdy puffs up all his feathers and lunges to bite.

I want him to like me and be able to take him out of his cage because the cage is rather tiny. What do i do??

I need advice from all you veterans out there! It's only been 2 days since my friend has gone so maybe it's just a matter of time?

Hi, and welcome to the community. Birds have a strong bond with their main caregivers and I suspect he misses your friend and his real home. It is quite normal he would want to bite you. My suggestion is to sit close by the cage and softly talk to him. Even eat a snack while sitting by him. You also can play some soft music on your tablet, or a CD player. Did she say if he eats fresh veggies or other fruits and foods? If he has a favorite treat try feeding it through the cage bars while you are sitting close to him.

I imagine if you let him out of cage, he may be hard to catch. Be sure no ceiling fans are on, and watch so he does not chew on electric cords or get caught behind furniture or other things like microwaves or kitchen appliances.

These suggestions may help him to warm up to you. Yes, I think after a few more days he will be more adjusted to you and your home. I do hope he will adjust so you can play with him!

Thank you very much for your welcome and advice! I hand fed him some peanuts and he seems to like that. Hopefully a few days will make him less prone to attacking anything that comes close

Hi and welcome to the site. Ellen gave you great information on how to charm your little friend. I have to add that lovebirds are sometimes very cage aggressive. Boomer was a real sweetheart but if I dared put my hand in his cage it would get bitten everytime. I would instead open his door and him climb out of it to the top where he would happily hop onto my finger. I hope your friends charms up to you. Lovies are great birds who love your attention.

Thanks Deanna! I had him out for a bit but he still doesn't really like fingers.... to be fair I'm kind of scared to give mine to him now so I just use my arm, or my hand covered with a cloth. Hopefully I'll get over it lol!

His owner used to easily pick him up and etc. so maybe I just need to give it a go?

    Cheers!

Yep, if you hesitate or show fear they will bite you everytime. I am happy he is coming out and getting on your arm and hopefully soon you will trust him enough to let him sit on you and give him pets.
