    Finally coming back!!

Only a handful of you will remember me...... We adopted a 4 month old male cockatiel in August, and exactly one week later he died..
I kept coming back here to stock up on knowledge, but it was so hard.... my family missed our little guy, and wanted a new one so badly....
FINALLY, the breeder we used for the last little guy has two males! We went to meet them on Sunday.... they were born Dec 23rd, and Dec 25th..... I actually suggested we would take BOTH, but she had someone who would take whichever one, we didnt.....

Our new little guys parents are Lutino and Pied... I've been told he is pied... I really don't understand how people figure this out so easily (except for the basic mutations). Our breeder said we will get him in about a month!!! I am soooooo nervous... I really don't think we did anything to kill our previous cockatiel, but its still in the back of my mind!!!

    Re: Finally coming back!!

Hi, and welcome back. The baby is simply beautiful I love the pics, and your little boy is so cute, ane so proud of him.

Bring him home with confidence, kowing it is a brand new journey. I understand your feelings, but often times an experience like the first one is an isolated incident. And I really do not think you did anything. Enjoy this new little one knowing he will bring joy and love to all of you.

Yes, he is a pied, meaning he has the grey, yellow and white feathers. In the picture, to me, he looks to have gray, white and yellow. If the grey were cinnamon color, then he would be a cinnamon pied. Go to the website called National Cockatiel Society. There you will find info and pics of all mutations. It is a great website.

    Re: Finally coming back!!

Hi, welcome back. What a gorgeous bubba! (human and avian!) I get how you feel. It is so hard not to blame yourself. But with birds, especially young ones, they are so fragile and sometimes things are just beyond your control. If you are worried and you have an avian specialist vet in the area, it might be worth taking your new bird in within a few days once he comes home. It's useful to get their thumbs up on the health of the bird, what to look out for and do, and to establish a baseline/relationship with the vet for if your bird gets sick in the future.

There's a post from me recently about losing my older bird where I was really questioning myself. After I lost him I have questioned every single decision I have ever made in his life, and this doesn't seem to be uncommon. I think it's a somewhat natural reaction to loss. I hope your new friend brings you some relief. They can never replace your friend in your heart, but I find caring for my new boy brings me an island of peace and acceptance in the midst of the turmoil. I hope your new friend brings you the same.

Good luck and please keep us updated!!!

    Re: Finally coming back!!

The new pictures are awesome. Of course, cameras sonetimes show a little different color than actual color feathering, but it sure looks to me like his darker feathers are cinnamon in color. The cinnamon mutations are my favorites. Time will tell. Such a sweet baby.....just like your son!

What a cute little baby bird!! Questioning your self when you lose a loved bird is something you will always do no matter how they die. It is just what we do when we lose them.

I guess I don't have a good picture to compare to, from one week ago, but here is our baby today... I think his chest is lightening up!

Yes, it does look to me like those feathers on his chest and body could be cinnamon color rather than grey. He is soooo sweet!

    Re: Finally coming back!!

How exciting that soon he will be home with you. I would be nervous and so happy at the same time. I never had a bird that was actually just a baby here and knowing me I would fret all the time wondering if it was hungry, thirsty or whatever else that my brain would decide to worry about.

    Re: Finally coming back!!

    Hey guys!
I took a little video yesterday for my husband to see how Linus lets me scratch his head now. He is very shy and scared all the time....will sit on our head, or shoulder but dont dare touch him.
I noticed he has dropped 7g since I weighed him last a month ago, and I am so paranoid. In the video he puts his head forward alot and is super quiet... do you think hes just cautiously wanting scratches, or do you think something is wrong with him?

    Re: Finally coming back!!

Awww!!! That is the sweetest video! That Archie is ALL boy. He is learning to talk...peek aboo!! Sooo cute, and also wolf whistling.

Has Linus always been more quiet than Archie? To me, Linus does seem somewhat so and a little puffed up. That would be acted flag for me. How far away is your vet? Could you take him for a wellness check? How do the poops look? Is he eating a lot, or just a little? What diet does he have? Is he drinking water? Is he very active or rather laid back?

    Re: Finally coming back!!

Linus is definitely extremely quiet... he gets into these moods once in awhile (seconds before the camera came out last night) and sings away... he has learned everything Archie knows. I believe he is a good eater, and drinker... I am at work all day but when I see him, I dont see any problems....

if he was sick, would he be puffed up all the time, or could occationally puffed up even indicate something... I have seen Archie puffed up and if I touch him, his feathers lay down. Does it make a difference that he is starting to molt? He is a hot mess with feathers falling out, and new ones growing in...

I just sent an email to the vet... its an hour away, and I am not sure how soon I can get in with my hectic life right now, but hopefully they have something Saturday.

    Re: Finally coming back!!

I'm taking Linus to the vet tomorrow at 4:20pm. I feel very worried. He dropped 3 more grams. I'm pretty sure he is acting completely normal but I'm a basket case as it Is, so now I'm questioning everything. After they ate loads of seeds Linus got a little vocal. Doesn't happen often.

    Re: Finally coming back!!

You're a great birdy mama. He is certainly enjoying those scritches! Linus does maybe look a little puffed and withdrawn, but it is hard to tell. One of mine was a little "off" similar to this and needed some antibiotics - higher than normal levels of gram negative gut bacteria. Fixed him right up. So it may be something simple like that. The weight dropping is a concern so I am glad you are headed to the vets, just in case! It is better to err on the side of caution because birds try so hard to hide their illnesses, so hopefully if it is anything at all you have caught it early. Wishing you the best of luck at the vets. Please give Linus a head scritch on my behalf!

    Re: Finally coming back!!

    Hey everyone!
We went to the vet yesterday.... we didnt see the owner of the clinic this time, but the girl we saw seemed very knowledgeable. She checked Linus out all over, she said everything looks good and he is in great shape.
She said with my concerns of him losing weight, AND just yesterday I noticed his poops are super teeny tiny.... we could start some tests.... She went to check the prices on the tests and when her and her assistant came back they said they talked and they feel they would be confident in telling me to not do any tests yet, and just monitor him closely. Make sure he is eating and drinking etc etc. The tests were $300 so I decided we would wait on those.

Im pretty sure he seems just fine... he has always been a quiet, scared little guy.... Im really worrying about his teeny poops though... Luckily we have a long weekend, and I dont really have much planned so we will be having him out alot and making sure he is eating well.

Here are the boys after Linus came back from the vet......

    Re: Finally coming back!!

Awww!! I love them! They almost look like twins! Are you by chance feeding pellets? They tend to make the poops very dry, and they will be smaller. If you are feeding pellets only, I would suggest adding seeds as well. My preference would be 80% seed and 20% pellets. Also encourage them to eat plenty of fresh veggies. You can chop them fine, and put some in a separate cup or plate, sprinkle some seeds over the veggie mix as well. Also, encourage them to drink lots of water.

I may have shared this info with you before. If so, I apologize for the repeat.

I think you were wise to forego the tests. Tests are soooo very stressful for them. With watching tbe diet and water consumption hopefully he willl be fine. Being more quiiet snd reserved is often because of the parents' DNA that the babies inherit. We will welcome updates anytime.

    Re: Finally coming back!!

The boys have been doing OK...
I am an EXTREME worrier so we had a rough weekend... I was doing way too much research and stressing over every little thing... I kept sending my breeder pictures of the paper towel after the boys would poop. I was convinced the pee was yellowish green...but she kept saying it looks normal...

I noticed the food dish was still pretty full each morning.. so I was worried something was wrong with Archie too. Someone is losing ALOT of little feathers..... my breeder said its normal for them not to eat as much when they molt... an online friend had told me I NEED to get them a little seed every day... so since I was doing that all last week maybe I ruined them on the pellets.... (we previously did not feed seed once we got them eating pellets well). I was happy to see yesterday after work the food dish was empty.... the kids had them out ALOT yesterday, and then I did again in the evening..

Hopefully all is well with my boys and they just had an off week. I need to get new batteries tonight for my kitchen scale and continue to monitor Linus... Any tips on weighing birds? I have been using a bowl but Linus jumps around like crazy inside which doesn't give me an accurate reading.

    Re: Finally coming back!!

I am super happy to hear they are doing OK. It is a worry to have birds, because I think they just bring to us a sense of love that one never really experiences, until you have two special ones like Linus and Archie. It is great that you can call the breeder and she will answer your questions, and give you support.

I am thinking if you were to use a millet sprig while weighing him, that might work. Put him in the bowl, let him eat millet off the sprig while you weigh him. Do they have larger food scales, or just small ones. It has been a long time since I used one, and that one was quite small. If you have a larger one, it might work better.

I am sending many scritches to those two precious little guys. We will watch for updates.

When weighing my birds I put some seeds on the middle of the scales before zeroing it. They tend to hop on willingly to get the seed
