Unhappy Need your advice, how to re-introduce new budgie girl to a widower budgie

    Dear all,

My family has been recently heart broken. Our gorgeous lime color budgie couple Chickies (Chico & Chica), which was madly in love with each other, lost Chica. She used to nibble on everything what comes on her way, including their breeding house made out of wood. Apparently some wood was stuck deeply in her throat and within couple of days she was gone. Chico was not himself after her death. It was his absolute soulmate and he was all the time screaming very loud to get her back. The calm music helped, but he was totally devistated.

We run to the same pet shop to get him the same type of girl, but they weren't available. The only girl we could get a white-purple-blue Blondie, we gave her this name. She is a bit younger then Chico, but full mature size and excellent, peaceful character. She is soooo beautiful. Bright colors, blond head, any man should fall for this beauty however, when we put Blondie in the cage with Chico, he was super stressed and not friendly at all. He doesn't want to speak with her, nor to sit next to her. She is actually interested to get to know him, but Chico is not making any effort towards this relationship. When she approaches him, he picks on her to stay away.....now they are two days together, sitting on the different brunches. It is 4 days since our Chica died. How long will it take to Chico to accept Blondie? He is fefinitely not lonely anymore but neither happy....

How can we make it work?

    Thank you

I'm so sorry you lost your precious budgie, Chica. May she fly over the rainbow bridge, free and at peace.

Budgies do go through a mourning phase. It is normal that Chico is not much interested in Blondie as yet. You will need to watch him diligently, because he may get more aggressive, chasing her, not letting her eat or drink, or controlling her every move. He aso could pick on her, and even injure her. If you see any such behavior, my suggestion is to remove her and place her in her own cage for a few weeks. You can do some hand taming with her while she is alone with you. A small room is best. Go to YouTube and search for..training baby budgies. You will find some great videos there.

We will hope that Chico will fully accept her. If you do put her in a separate cage, have them together in one cage each day, for an hour or so. Then gradually increase their time together, as long as he is not being aggressive, and you are confident they will get along, even at night. If he gets aggressive at any time, then separate them.

I am sorry you lost your sweet Chica and sending you my sympathy. It has to be hard to see Chico mourning over his loss and Ellen gave you great advice. It takes them time to mourn and right now he does not want another girl trying to buddy up with him. In time he will and I am sure they will get along great. Poor guy really must miss his Chica

    Fly free sweet Chica...
Fly Free Boomer, we will forever love you.
