    Losing feathers .... please help

    Hi everyone,

We have the most beautiful male lovebird who is nearly 3 yrs old, hand reared and just an amazing character. Problem is we have noticed feathers have been falling out around the base of his tail and has created a bit of a bald patch ... does anyone have any advice what is causing this?

    Thanks so much

    Burdi

Hi, Debbie, and welcome to the community. My suggestion is to call an Avian vet in your area, and take him in for a checkup.

Re: Losing feathers .... please help

Pick up as many of the fallen feathers as you can - and take them and the bird to an avian vet. Feathers too because it could be diagnostically helpful to see whether they've fallen, been pulled, or sheared etc

Ellen - I think what you're seeing as a lump is the preen gland - One vet was very surprised when I asked for an appointment for my lovebird who had a blocked preen gland as he didn't think they had one (despite being a good avian vet) which makes me think possibly they are a lot less prominent/not there in other lovie species - however fischer's and masked do have them.

There are lots of reasons this could be happening - but it basically comes down to three things:

1 - Patch molting (but because your bird is 3 and it's not happened before, and because the wing feathers look in bad condition too, I'm going to say it's not this)

2 - Something is medically wrong (this could be something like mites, or even something as simple as an ingrown feather - and to me the preen gland does look like it could be a little enlarged, suggesting it could be blocked - but so hard to tell without reference points and more pics. I had this with one bird and was relatively successful/easy to treat).

3 - The bird is doing this to himself (which could be because of something medical (like if he had an irritation there), or behavioural)

Regardless of the cause, you need to get on top of this as soon as possible, to prevent anymore damage (and any habits from setting in. And trust me - from someone experienced with pluckers, you don't want that becoming a habit!)

Let us know how it goes and good luck!

Thanks Lee for the adorable sig!

My guess it is his preen gland that is clogged because the plucking is centered all around it. I would definitely get him to a vet him right away.

Or maybe you you've never preened your birds coz they've been collared, or needed to bathe them coz they've got into something they shouldn't have lol

Had a bird who had an ingrown feather by the gland years so, and it caused a minor impaction (possibly coz the feather hurt so they couldn't preen the gland usual). Quite easy to address with some gunk and antibiotics from the vet, but I learned lots about them that fortnight lol

Dont feel silly Ellen the first time we ever felt Boomers we freaked out thinking something seriously was wrong with him and we had him for well over a year when Carissa found it on him. They look so weird to see and really can make you think something horrible is on them but its just there preen gland. We called the vet when we found it and they knew just by where it was what was it was

Hi all, well burdi went to the vet yesterday and he has a preen gland impaction and is on antibiotics and pain killers and having a laser light treatment on the area for the next 3 days at the vet. Burdi pulled out a feather which caused alot of bleeding so we rushed him to the vet. He's on Baytril/Enrovet for 10 days and Metacam for 5 days. But really happy to say he was chirpy and getting back to his happy self today.
