Cool B&G Macaw vs. Green-wing Macaw vs. Umbrella Cockatoo vs. Moluccan Cockatoo

    Hi everyone,

I am planning to get a large parrot either from the macaw of cockatoo family, and I have narrowed it down to 4 options: Blue and Gold Macaw, Green-wing Macaw, Umbrella Cockatoo or Moluccan Cockatoo. I have ample space for any of the 4, my family and neighbors are very tolerant of noise as I have had many noisy pets in the past. I have done my research about each of the species, but I would like some opinions from people on this forum. Which of the 4 species would you recommend and why?

    Details you might find useful
    • I live with my parents and two brothers.
    • We live in a suburban area
    • My family has experience with pets, especially parrots.
    • I have both an indoor and outdoor enclosure for the parrot, plenty of safe natural perches and toys as well as plenty of time to interact with him/her.

You are a brave family to get a big bird. My sister has a Orange Wing Amazon and a Moluccan Cockatoo. Both are super sweet birds but they also can snap on you and sometimes bite hard enough to send you to the doctors for stitches. Sam the Cockatoo is a real sweetheart but he is the one that snaps sometimes and bites you, especially when he is feeling hormonal. He is super sweet and quite the clown. I have not been around any other big birds so really cant advice you on which big bird to choose but wanted to let you know a little about wild and crazy Sam.
Fly Free Boomer, we will forever love you.

Is dust or allergies an issue in the family? Anyone with breathing issues - just thinking the Cockatoo dust could be a deciding factor...

Plus are either of those species on any special watch lists? Just wondering if you might have difficulty if you even relocate or cross state lines (if that's a likelihood - just thinking ahead coz hopefully these birds will be with you most/all of your life!)

I do know 'toos seem to be more prone to picking. I mean, any bird can pick/pluck, but toos have more of a reputation for it.

Thanks Lee for the adorable sig!
