    Hi all,

Yesterday, I just bought a new normal grey cockatiel! He is really cool, about 10 weeks old. Any name ideas??

    Re: New Bird!!!

Hi, and welcome!!!!! Awwww...what a beautiful baby. There is a website called Cockatiel Cottage, where you can see a list of hundreds of names. I have homed cockatiels, and they are people birds, with a big personality, and of great intelligence. Males are very vocal and can learn to talk, whistle tunes, and mimnic sounds. They are also very determined.

Unless your bird was dna sexed, it is too early as yet to know for sure you have a boy. Just looking at your bird, my thought is, you could have a girl.

We will watch for updates, and hope to see you often here on the forum.

    Re: New Bird!!!

    Day 3 Update:
He enjoys coming out of the cage and sitting on my knee, hand and shoulder, and I'm still thinking of a name. Right now he is eating Zupreem pellets and seeds plus some veggies. He is currently free flighted enjoys flying, but I'm a little worried of him getting to a high place where I can't reach him. Any advice.

Wow!! You are making great progress with him. Some owners entice them back to the cage with a treet such as millet, or, place a plate of his seed mix and some freshly chopped green veggies on top of his cage, when it is time for him to go back. Some folks teach them the meaning of ......go back. Give that command when it is time. You also can get a butterfly net, or make one. They have the longer handle so it is easier to reach them on a curtain rod, by using one. And it is sooo much better than having to chase them or hand towel them. That scares them.

Keep up the great bonding you are doing with him. You are well on the way to be his best friend.

    Re: New Bird!!!

Our first week together has been going great! He loves coming out and playing! He is eating his food really well, and fresh food wise, he has eaten a little collard greens, and I think I'm going to try some broccoli because he likes foraging for seed-like things. He loves both his toy and especially loves chewing on and carrying around zip ties which I attach the toys with. Right now he is sitting on my laptop and grinding his beak in a content way. One I would like to note that I found interesting is that at my local pet shop is that cockatiels (untame) there are $180!. I got him from a breeder where he only cost $60 and was hand tamed. Incredible difference. I would also like to thank everyone on here who helped me with information and advice! Thanks!

p.s. Still looking for a name!!

    Re: New Bird!!!

You were fortunate to pay only $60, and from a breeder no less. The prices for pet shop tiels have really spiked over the last few years. And for all birds. I have seen a selling price for a conure to be $375-400.

You are doing a great job with him, and he is loving being with you. This is a testimony to a private breeder, for sure. It is sure worth getting one from an excellent breeder.
