    Unhappy Is my budgie sick?

Hi! I bought my first budgie 10 days ago and I am not sure if it's healthy. It plucks its feathers, and those that haven't been plucked are messy. Also, his vent seems dirty. I try to take care of him as best as I can. He won't eat fruit, he eats seeds and he tried a boiled egg yesterday. I change his water daily and cover him up when he's sleeping. He chirps often, but twice he screamed while flapping his wings and I had no idea what scared/bothered him. Am doing something wrong? Any advice on the situation?

Hi, and welcome? What seed mix are. you feeding? The fruit could be causing loose droppings. Did the seller say how old he is? Feather loss could be the result of now living in a new home, or environment, or, that he is about a year old and is having a molt. They can have what I call a pre-molt, at about 6 months old as well.

I personally, would call an Avian vet, and take him in for a wellness check. Birds hide their illnesses very cleverly, so if it is an illness, it needs to be checked out ASAP.

If he's flapping his wings while standing on the perch, that's just exercising the wings.
If he's flapping his wings and flying in the cage, he's probably scared.
I agree with Ellen, take the bird to an avian vet for a well bird checkup. I don't like the idea that the vent is dirty.

    Re: Is my budgie sick?

Unfortunately I threw away the box that had the seeds in it, and put them in a glass container. Next time I buy one I'll check. He doesn't eat the fruit I give him, no idea why... And no, the seller didn't say how old he is exactly. The budgies he sells are all from 3 to 8 months old, that's what he said. Thanks for taking time to answer me, I'll probably contact a vet...

    Re: Is my budgie sick?

Budgies are not into fruit as much as eating fresh leaf lettuce, and other fresh veggies. Also frozen, thawed veggies. Do not feed cabbage family veggies to budgies, including kale, parsley, and broccoli or cauliflower. This family of veggies can cause esophageal tumors in budgies.
