    Question Two-Week-Old cockatiel babies!

I just picked up a pair of two-week-old cockatiels from a person who didn't have time to raise them. One is pretty runty so I think it's the younger, and also underfed. The person told me they fed them every six to seven hours.

They were both a bit cool, so I've got them in a makeshift brood box. The little one has perked up quite well and both were very hungry! I'm bumping up their feeding to every two hours for now, and will get them in for a vet check, just to be safe. Is there anything I should watch for as it looks like they've had a bit of a rough start?

I made a picture album for them, but I don't know how to post them in the forum yet, so hopefully you can at least see them that way. As you will see, the bigger one had food caked to his beak that had to be cleaned off before feeding. They were really snuggly after feeeding time!

    Re: Two-Week-Old cockatiel babies!

I saw the photos. They're so cute!! I'm glad you're feeding them every 2 hours. I normally feed babies that young when I feel the crop is low. I let the crop empty overnight. If you can, weigh the babies before the first morning feeding.

And, I don't know if you've handfed before, but just in case, I thought I'd mention that you put the syringe in the left side of the beak and the food goes down the right side of the throat. Very important to remember to avoid aspiration. If you have handfed before and already know this, there are lots of people who view these posts, so hopefully someone will find this information helpful.

Thanks for the advice- I have hand fed before but it's been a while, so I don't mind pointers! They seem very bright and active this morning...one night down, sixty or so to go. I'm sure I'll be asking more questions soon!

And update- they're eating and vocalizing quite a bit...lol. I have a vet checkup scheduled tomorrow afternoon. Well-baby check, as it were. Never hurts to get an expert opinion!

I just took them to the avian vet to see if they were doing okay. The vet says they are strong little tykes, and very healthy! Chick is weighing in at a whopping 58 grams, and little Dude is coming in at 40 grams. And the feedings continue!

    Re: Two-Week-Old cockatiel babies!

Well, they are both very active little chicks for 26 days old, which is great! Little Dude isn't gaining much weight though, and seems much smaller than Big Chick. (More pics in my album- I haven't figured out how to post them here yet) The vet said he had a rough start since he was pretty sluggish when I first got them. Right now I'm adding more frequent feedings...Big Chick doesn't mind... and checking the scale daily. Any other advice is always welcome! Hopefully, Little Dude will catch up soon and my sleep cycle will improve.

Just an update- Chick and Dude are doing great! Dude has finally caught up with his bigger sibling and has quite the attitude, pushing his way into the veggie plate! They both have started eating seeds and greens (and love apples!). I suspect it won't be long until they are off to their new home.
