Older Cockatiel bites - need advice

Hi. Just adopted an 11 year old male cockatiel. Bites when I put my hand near him to pick him up. This is my fourth cockatiel and haven't had this issue before. Use to bite former owner too. Can anyone recommend ideas for me to get him to stop biting? Thank you.

Hi, and welcome to the community. Since he is 11 years old, it will be more of a challenge to tamp down the biting, but in time, he may change. For a week or two, I suggest you let him settle in. Sit by his cage and talk softly to him, play music on a CD, or radio, play the Disney channel on TV for him. Tielsl ove kids and sounds of the cartoon characters. Eat a snack while sitting by the cage and even read him a kids book.

Get some millet sprigs at the pet shop, and in a few days, take a sprig, extend it out to him, with your hand not showing as much as possible, and let him eat off the top of the sprig. Praise him when he will eat some. Practice this exercise a few times a day. I am hopeful in time, he will eat the millet. Do not lose heart on him. You have plenty of time ahead to vet to know each other. Time and patience are on your aside. Do not force him in anyway to interact with you that will cause him to defend himself by having to bite. It may take several weeks. But take one day at a time. Tiels are happy and love people and to sing, mimic words, and talk. They love life, with us. Please keep us updated.

Welcome to the forum! Maxollie gave you great advice to get your new bird to like you. I hate to say that some birds just like to bite and if they were not taught at a young age not to bite they may just do it forever. Boomer forever would bite me but oddly he never ever would bite my daughter. Hopefully in time and plenty of sweet talking and treats your new guy will decide you are too nice to not bite. I hope so.
Fly Free Boomer, we will forever love you.
