Urgent Help: Lovebird nest egg problem.

Hello, I reciently adopted 2 love birds and in their nest box is build up of disgusting residue of poop newspaper, and seeds. But I notice there are 2 eggs in there. I want to replace the nest box to a fresh clean one. Is there anyway i can move the egg to the new box or will i have to wait until it hatches and grows? I don't want the potential child egg to be raised in filfth. What could I do to fix this situation? Please let me know soon and I appreciate you taking the time to read this and give me any info that helps!

Oh boy. What to do... You can put the eggs in a warm place and quickly clean the nest with hot water. Put some dry grass or sawdust on the bottom and put the eggs back. That should do the trick.

I've done it before, and the hen didn't mind.

There was a breeder here at one time that did not clean his nest box because as he said it is natural for the boxes to get dirty when they have eggs and babies in there. He also mentioned to me that a clean box also makes the chances of getting splay legs easier for the new babies. If you think about it the wild birds nests must be very dirty and even moist because of rain outside and they do just fine. If you change out the box the birds might abandon the eggs and they will never hatch. I am not a breeder and really am just saying what the breeder who use to be here said to me a very long time ago.

I agree with all that Deanna shared. I had a pair of budgies that hatched 4 babies, a few years ago. At the time, I had read to not disturb the nest from time hen started setting on eggs, until all the eggs had hatched and the babies had climbed out of box, fledged, perched and were eating on their own. When all that was accomplished, and it was time to take the nest box out of cage, I glanced inside the box, and....whew....it sure was dirty and full of poop, but the babies were all healthy and beautiful. I was happy I did not disturb the box!

Hello, with my more shy birds I never clean the nest before the babies can fly (or add a layer of hemp shavings when the nest is too filthy), for the birds more comfortable with me and when the nest is very dirty I'd rather wait the 2nd or 3rd week.
