Budgie is afraid to leave cage

Hey everyone! My Budgie, Spritle likes to come out of his cage and play but, everytime I try to take him more than a foot away from his cage, he frantically flies back to the top of his cage and sometimes smacks into things on his way back. he also is too afraid to go any lower than his the top of his cage. I don't know how to get him to feel more comfortable away from his cage. I was wondering if anyone had some training methods or suggestions to help him be comfortable with going other places in the room.

    Thanks:-)

How old is your budgie? Did you recently bring him into your home?

It takes time for them to finally take the first steps out of the cage, even longer for them to want to really explore and hang out outside of there cage. Spray millet is a great bribing food. Hang a little bit of it just outside of his cage and perhaps that will get him out.

Once your fid gets acquainted with it's cage, it becomes their safe place, their sanctuary. Like Ellen and Deanna mentioned, if you just brought him home, it's going to "Take Time". Deanna gave you the of a piece of millet as bribing food. But please, let bird get acclimated in it's new surroundings.

That is sad to read. Your brd seems really sad. This question would be best answered by a person with much budgie experience. I have had budgies for years , but thet were not as scared as your baby here. Hope you get sent some good info to help you with your budgie,

Maybe, first of all, you should make a bigger cage and let Budgie to make itself comfortable in it? And then - try to invite him outside.

Re: Budgie is afraid to leave cage

All birds and budgies have different stress levels as to coming out of their cage. It is not absolutely neccsary for them to come out. Your bird just prefers staying inside. I do not think this makes him a sad bird at all. My budgie cannot come out of his cage because my rental lease does not allow free flying in my apartment. He is soon to be 8 years old, loves his birdy mirror girlfriends, has no other birds in his cage, eats, drinks water, talks, sings, and has always been happy in his cage.

Budgies are super fast, flying all over a house. They can chew wires, fall behind appliances, or furniture, and fly into windows, and get severely injured. Some die from being electrocuted.

Sometimes we have to compromise with our birds and not force them out of cage.
