    New baby

    Hi guys,

I have a question. So my baby tiel is between 3-4 weeks now and i'm hand rearing. He is very scared. Every time i walk past him he screams and hisses. He was with him momma up until a few days before i got him. I try to handle him as much as possible but he strikes out and tries to bite. Will this get better over time?

    Thanks

Trying not to sound to harsh here....

Wait.... Your baby tiel is only 3 - 4 weeks old? Are you experienced in hand rearing baby birds? If not, and please don't take this the wrong way, but if I were you, I would return the baby tiel back to the breeder or where you purchased it from. A "Reputable" store and or breeder would wait until the baby tiel is at least 12 weeks old. You will save yourself the heartbreak and save the birds life by waiting the approximate 12 weeks and making sure that the baby can eat on it's own. Once the baby is 12 weeks and also in good health, then get the bird back from the store/breeder.

    Re: New baby

I have HR a few babies so i know more or less what needs to be done. I don't have any issues with the HR, crop is full and empties and works fine. Poop is normal color and consistency. Only question i have is if the hissing and striking will stop as none of my other babies have ever done that. Other babies was HR from much younger age though, so could it be that interaction from earlier was the difference?

    Re: New baby

I am thinking you may have a girl. I've had both boys and girls, but not bringing them into my home until they were at least 12 weeks old. I feel they should remain with parents and the aviary, or petshop, or seller until then. Hens do tend to hiss more. In my view, he or she is very alert and beginning to respond with sounds, moves, etc. That is very encouraging. And further, hand feeding and socializing do encourage them due to our touching them. But I also feel that early touching and holding them can make them have separation anxiety as they get older, because they got used to human touch early on, and crave it, along with us giving them attention all the time.

We will welcome your updates anytime.
