    That was short lived. He must've only allowed me to do it because it was almost time for bed. I bought a large flight cage and now he won't come out. o.o;

Got him his own big cage. I didn't like how he kept getting knocked down to the bottom of the flight cage. Lost some brand new flight feathers that way. He still doesn't care for me much.

All birds have their own personality. I don't think you have done anything at all to cause him to be so independent. I think he will love his new cage. That just might mellow him out, and he will interact with you more.

He certainly does! He's not a fan of anyone, especially since my stupid brother manhandled him, despite my warnings that Dale bites and he bites hard. My brother has three new scars on his finger.

Anyway, he prefers the company of the budgies. He'll start making noise and pacing back and forth in his cage if you roll theirs out of the room. Since he can't fly yet, he can't leave his cage. The skirt at the bottom and the multiple trays at the top leave him climbing around the outside in circles. Can't take him out of the cage because he freaks out whenever a foodless hand gets near.

I just remembered that the guy at the store said they had to move him to a smaller cage away from foot traffic because he was getting stressed.

Maybe I just have an antisocial bird?

Re: Think my tiel hates me now

When we do not know the entire history of a bird/cockatiel, there is always the possibility there could have been an event in his early life that helped to form a part of his personality. Sometimes the first hatched of the clutch gets all the attention for a few days, after the eggs start to hatch, and also, the first hatched gets more food as well. Usually the first hatched is a bigger bird as well. And being a male, which really is macho, to male cockatiels, they can have an attitude problem. He may grow our of it in time.

I think it is funny and unique that the budgies are his best friends, because often times, cockatiels find budgies a nuisance, because they are very energetic birds, always busy, and sometimes they like to pick on the cockatiels fest.

Getting him a cockatiel friend is a possibility, but quite honestly, he might be very dominant of the new bird, or, even be aggressive. It is impossible to know. Maybe a female would mellow him out!!

Re: Think my tiel hates me now

So I'm restarting from scratch. Dale never had the advantages that my budgies had as far as having a cage I cold practically place close enough for me to put hand in.

Now that he has a great, big rolling cage for himself, I've wheeled it right next to me on the couch. I've got my hand in it now, resting on one of his perches with a nutriberry pinched between my thumb and forefinger.

Maybe this "reboot" is what's needed because the butthead just isn't taking to me.

Awesome purchase!! That big cage is perfect! Nice size for Dale, and convenience to roll him all over the house! Great "reboot"" for sure! And it sounds like he just might get more tame, especially with the nutriberries! Keep us posted!!

Re: Think my tiel hates me now

I didn't take into account that he can fly now. Now he won't go back into his nice, big cage I bought. Instead, he'll perch on or in the budgie's cage. He's not as skittish as he originally was but he and I are still very quite clearly NOT friends. Very much hissy and snappy.

Obviously I'm not going to give up but I wonder if there are cases where the bird simply doesn't want anything to do with their owners.

Re: Think my tiel hates me now

All birds have their very own personality. Some of that comes from DNA, and the rest is a social thing. I do not think you have done anything to cause it. He just seems to be super independent. I think it is cool he hangs out with the budgies. Most tiels tend to think budgies are a nuisance to them, because being smaller, they are everywhere, fliting around, whereas, cockatiels are bigger, and have very strong wings, and when they fly, they are not quite as fast.

Keep using the nutriberries, and other treats, trying to tame him more. I do think the cage was an excellent idea. All birds need their very own cage, in my view.

Happy New Year to you and your flock! Time and patience are on your side! Do not give up on Dale!!

Re: Think my tiel hates me now

Haha...I feel like I can't let him out of his cage because he just flies to the budgie's cage. Since I can't touch him or even offer him treats 99% if the time, I can't get him back into his own cage. Not without toweling or getting bit. It's been six months. Maybe he doesn't like men? Or some birds just simply don't bond with their owners. If two people don't necessarily like or get along with someone, I see no reason why that logic can't apply here...

At this point he just sits next to me and I make sure he's fed, has water, and a clean cage. I'll talk to him but usually when I do he usually moves as far away as he can or starts rapidly pacing back and forth.

You very well could be right. There are some birds that don't like men! My cockatiel, Penny, a male, does not like tbe sound of men's voices on TV. He has a favorite commercial on TV. He LOVES the emmu on the Liberty Mutual website!!! Dale is happy in his environment anyway. That is a real plus!!
