    Question Eating poop

Does anybody know what might be deficient in my cockatiels diet for her to be trying to eat poop? I’m keeping the cage extra clean to discourage it. She is currently in a breeding cycle on one egg due to lay one tomorrow. There is cuttle bone as well as oyster shell in the cage. Also I feed a vitamin enriched combination of seed, zupreem pellets, and tropimix. They refuse to eat fresh anything so I’ve learned this assortment gives them a good variation of seed and pellet and goodies they actually eat. I’m just wondering if there is something more she’s lacking or if it’s a bad habit from before I got her. Also of note the cage has a greater on the bottom and the treaty under i use currently like a paper shed type bedding in it that I change every other day it's a pretty good stretch of her tongue to reach any but nest poops are huge. also she picks any little piece off the bars which I'm also doing my best to keep up on. I've already changed from corn cob to this paper because of heard the cob was bad.

Wished I could help you out but I honestly am not sure why they do this. Some say it is lacking certain nutrients in the diet but most say it is just something some birds do. I might be tempted to put paper on the bottom of her cage and then sprinkling a bit of her seed mix down on the paper in hopes she will "forage" on the seeds and not her poop. If this does not work I would just keep the cage super clean and hopefully she will stop doing it.

    Re: Eating poop

Unfortunately, cockatiels eat poop. I know, right?? All my tiels have done it. Like you, the cage gets cleaned each day and I have tried deterring my birds from doing so. I just threw in the towel. I even mentioned it to my vet and she said that the behavior is normal in birds. The diet you have your tiel on seems fine. My cockatiel will eat fresh veggies, only on his terms and when he feels like it. You are doing everything just fine.

Usually when birds are nesting or hormonal, their poops do seem a little runny and large. Now that the sunlight is getting shorter each day, you should cover you cockatiel earlier. This will help the hormones stay under control.

Thanks so much for your input guys.I didn't know it was a cockatiel thing. I will definitely read the article and check out the vet. Is that the one on cascade? I'm about an hour from the GR area but I'll definitely be getting in touch with them because I. Will have a few breeding pairs and a couple pets as well. I'm picking up a few new birds Monday.
