    Safe harness material???

Hi all, I was looking into a flight harness for my parakeet (for use only when training or for short trips, of course) and I found some on amazon. All the harnesses there are either too expensive for what they are, or cheaply made/unsafe. I want to make my own for him but, I don't know what to use. I have read that nylon (dog leash material) has chemicals that are toxic and could be chewed and ingested (although I doubt my boy would chew it) and I don't know if regular fabric would hold up. I am slowly going to introduce it to him once it's made but, I'm concerned that putting him in a harness might affect our bond, since he doesn't like being touched on his back.

My daughter bought a Aviator harness made out of i think nylon for her conure and she put it on top of his cage hanging off a food bowl up there. He could see it and when he got out of the cage he would get close to it so he slowly got use to it. Getting it on is a slow process that will take time and lots of hurt fingers from the bites. Tikki lets her put it on but it always is a struggle and Tikki is not too comfortable in it at all but tolerates it. This is one that we were going to try to make for Tikki but she decided to just buy him the aviator harness instead. http://www.parrotforums.com/do-yours...t-diy-yet.html

Here is my opinion. Being so small, I feel your parakeet is going to resist having a harness, or aviator. And it may traumatize him so severely, he will be forever frightened of you. I suggest you getting him a small cage to travel, or even to take a walk. You can get some neat ones, that are not too expensive. They are often used to transport birds to a vet. I would be sure to get one that is well made, and secure, so he cannot escape it.
