    Greetings!

    Hello everyone.

I'm brand new to this forum and very happy to be able to be part of it. I am a parakeet owner by default of my impatient 14 year old son who did not have enough patience to work with his budgie. So now he's mine! I'm happy to say that Coco is coming along nicely and we are quickly becoming buddies.

I am a high school Spanish teacher and in my 23rd year of education. I was formerly a music teacher for twelve years before switching subjects to my other passion which is the Spanish language. I am a husband of 27 years and a father to four children and 1 grandchild. My hobbies include spending time with my family, speaking Spanish, music, physical fitness, and of course spending time with my new parakeet Coco. I hope to be able to learn more about budgies and also to share my own experiences with everyone. I look forward to the input and advice as I walk through this new experience.

Welcome to the forum Craig. Sadly not many people are here anymore because of social media like facebook but the ones left here are all very sweet people. I am happy you are becoming friends with Coco and with time and patience you will find that he may be your best buddy to have fun with.
Fly Free Boomer, we will forever love you.

Thanks for your reply. I kinda wondered why nobody was responding to my post. But thank you kindly for the warm welcome. Yes, I hope that the forum will be of some help to me as I navigate being a new bird owner. I had a cherry headed conure many years back when I was in college, but he was not a very nice bird - not hand tamed and would always try to bite me if I attempted to get him to sit on my finger. But Coco is definitely better. Thanks again.

Lucky you to have owned a cherry head! They are beautiful birds! We live 3 hours away from San Francisco where there is huge flocks of Cherry Head Conures flying free and they are so amazing to see as wild birds. We sit for hours in parks watching them and come home with sore cheeks from smiling so much.

Parakeets are sweet little birds. I have friends who have them and they are friendly social birds with sweet little voices and chirps. Some of them have great vocabularies as well. If you look up "meet disco the talking parakeet" You will be shocked at how well this little bird could talk. Sadly he died a few years back but his videos will keep him alive forever.
Fly Free Boomer, we will forever love you.

    Re: Greetings!

Hi, Craig, and welcome to the community. Thanks for sharing all about your life and family with us. And, your sweet Coco! I too love music, and have shared both community events music, and church music, with friends, family, and church congregations my whole life. I am a grandma with four beautiful granddaughters, ages 31, 28, 17, and 16. I have one married son, and a daughter-in-law. They have two awesome dogs, Henry and Andi, a male and female.

I have homes parakeets/budgies for many, many years. They are hardy and loving birds, always chirping and singing, and yes, some do talk. You can find little Disco, that Deanna referred to on YouTube. He was one fantastic and intelligent budgie. I think budgies are an awesome pet. I got my first one, when I was 11 years old. Mickey, a male, lived 9 years. Today, I have Muffin, who is 9 years old now. He lost his sight about a year ago, but can navigate his cage, eat and drink, and loves to play with his mirror girlfriends, Bella, Bailee, and Pearl. Blindness does not stop him from living a normal life. He is full of courage, and loves life, even though he is blind.

I also have a 2 year old male cockatiel, Penny. I taught him to beak rhythms. He too is very intelligent. He beaks a rhythm, and expects me to repeat what he beaks perfectly. I use a jar lid. He beaks on cage floor or on his food cup. Now, if I repeat his rhythm perfectly, he does another one. If I don't, he stops and won't do any more. Now coming from a bird...that is perfection!!!! Both Muffin and Penny, are naturals at learning each others sounds. Birds are totally awesome pets. You will love the journey with Coco!!

Please stop by often. We will love hearing all about Coco!! And your family, musical and Spanish talents!!

I send prayers to you, and your family, during this terrible virus pandemic we are suffering! Stay safe!
