One male paired with 2 Females in same nest

Hi Guys,

I have a small colony of Budgie. Recently I noticed that a male is pairing with 2 females and both females are sharing the same nest box. I waited for some time to see the progress, and then they laid 7 eggs and they are now hatched.

Can anybody tell me if this is some unusual behavior or this happens with budgies?

It is common for males to pair with two males, especially in the wild. I have read where males can have several breeding partners.

Are you sure both females laid eggs. A female can lay up to ten eggs. Usually it is 5-6. Often times two females do not get along well in one nest box, because females are very protective of their eggs, and often get into aggressive behavior.

Congrats on the new babies! Dad and moms will be busy feeding that many babies.
