    Question constantly opening budgie beak

My beautiful budgie, Bluester, constantly opens his beak. There is no noise, no grinding, no discharge, no regurgitation. He seems pretty healthy and happy, is out and about with us all day. he just keeps moving his beak in this way even when we're holding him and talking to him. It's like a person tapping their index finger. He will do it for 20 minutes or more if he's just perched. He loves to chew on his cloth toys - and it's a similar motion at times. Any ideas why he does this?

Hi, and welcome to the community. How old is Bluester? It is possible, he could have DNA gene that has caused this. Or, he may have been handfed as a baby and that caused his beak to move as it does. I would not be too concerned at this point, as long as he is eating, is very active, is drinking, and is energetic and healthy otherwise.

He's 3 years old and only started doing this at about 2 years old. Otherwise he seems very happy, healthy and active.

Given that you say there's no clicking or grinding sounds, which would indicate a health issue, there could be several benign explanations, the most likely is that he's 'silently talking.' That would make particular sense since you report it started at about 2 years old.

Adjusting his crop maybe. But if he has cloth toys, I would get rid of them. They could accumulate in his crop and cause digestive issues.
