    Possible sour crop?

    Hi,
We have a four week old parakeet chick that we have been hand feeding for two weeks since the mother rejected it. It is mostly feathered, has stared flying and is beginning to eat seeds. Since the last feeding and now (about four hours) it doesnít seem like itís crop has emptied at all (still very firm). Is this the beginning of sour crop or has it just been eating enough seeds to keep its crop full? Besides the crop it seems to be acting normal/alert/active. Should we be concerned? What should we be looking for to tell if there is a problem or not?
This is our first chick (unplanned egg) and we are learning as we go, so Iím not sure if weíre stressing about nothing or if there is a real problem.

Any advice would be appreciated, thank you for your time.

Ps: moderators, I accidentally posted this under the cockatiel forum first, and then couldnít figure out how to move or delete the original post. I did edit it to reflect the mistake. Sorry about that.

Hi, and welcome to the community! Do not be concerned about posting on the wrong topic\parrot. I am sure moderator understands.

Awww!!! Congrats on the precious baby!!! I do not know much about sour crop, but my thought is because you have added seeds to the diet, they would stay longer in the crop because they are solid foods, and it would take longer for them to digest, and therefore, the baby would not be hungry as soon as usual. It is great he or she is doing well, and now eating seeds, and seems to be normal right now.

Perhaps you could call an Avian vet in your area, and give them your concern. Tell them what you have been doing to keep the baby thriving up until now, and see if they would give you some advice.

We will welcome your updates anytime!

Update: so the babyís crop cleared by morning and it it seems to be emptying normally between feedings today, so I think we were just jumping at nothing (baby birds are very stressful hopefully it continues to do well.

Thank you for the welcome maxollie!

That is awesome news! Your little baby will be your best friend for life. There is something special about handfeeding them. It socializes them as well, and makes them get used to being handled, early on before they fledge.

We will welcome updates any time!
