    Budgie Foot Problem

    Hi all
New here, wondering if I could get some advice for my baby boy Ollie (short for broccoli)

He is about 3YO. Green and yellow budgie.
Seeming both happy and healthy until now; but in the last few days he is having trouble with his right foot. He is having trouble perching and putting weight in it.
It appears to be curling slightly at the talons.

I have taken him to 2 separate vets. The first simply cut his nails, the second told me there is nothing wrong with him.

Gets plenty of exercise, spending most days out of his “room” (cage). This is cleaned at least once a day. I’m a bit of a bird rookie so I do admit he doesn't have the best diet. Eats a bit of greens, ect but is pretty seed heavy diet wise.

Not really sure how to add photos in here yet. Will do when i figure it out
Edit- cannot add photos as admin hasn’t given me access. Sorry!

    Appreciate any help

    Welcome.

Does it appear swollen at all? Any difference in color or shape from the other foot? What sort of perches do you have?

    Hi
    Thanks for the reply.
No, nothing note worthy. Seems to be the same in texture/colour.

I did have plastics. But changed them to the sandpaper type after doing some research online.
The vet has told me off for using these too - so as of today I have started using branches.

Hi I don’t know much either because I’ve been a budgie mum for about 5 days.. but I have seen a lot of people saying that you have to watch their weight or the branches/sandpaper are irritating the bottom of the feet. Good luck!

Your vet is correct: sandpaper perches are terribly dangerous for budgies and can cause bumble foot, among other issues. Glad you got rid of them. I can't believe they are still sold and that stores still carry them, along with those awful sheets of sandpaper cage liners. Ideally, you want perches of different thicknesses to exercise the feet. The plastic perches and wooden dowels commonly sold with cages should be discarded (or use the dowels for training) and replaced. Glad to hear you're using natural wood branches which are ideal.

I bet it was the sandpaper that made his foot tender.
