Weird yellow mucousy poop

Hi. Please help.
I took in a baby house sparrow four days ago, and it has been developing well. However this morning I woke up an hour late and after feeding it it did this abnormal poop. It's got the usual white chalky part and the urine but the faeces are dark yellow, semi translucent and very gelatinous. It has since done another like this.

I haven't found a ton of info but sone places say this is caused by a parasite. Is there another explanation? Thank you for any help.

If you have any animal rescues in your area chances are they take in birds and they will be able to help you out with your question. Someone here might be able to help you but you might be able to get a instant answer from a rescue that takes in baby birds. I hope you little bird is going to be OK. I had a relative that raised a sparrow many years ago and when they released it the little cutie would come back to the house to go in its cage to sleep. They had it for years until one day it never came back.

Thanks, if it was native I would definitely do that but since it's considered a pest I'm concerned they would simply destroy it.

I've noticed the weird poop only happens in the mornings after the first feed. It's still developing rapidly so hopefully all is fine.

Hey there and welcome to the forum... It does sound like a parasite to me and it doesn't surprise me since it's a wild bird. The house sparrow could have received the parasite from one of the parents as it was feeding. If the stools (poop) starts to improve, I wouldn't worry. It's amazing what these wild birds can handle.

That makes me sad they concider a sparrow and pest and wouldnt help you. Our two rescues here take in lots of baby wild birds every year and train volunteers just what to do so they can be released back into nature.

I am happy his poops are not like that all the time and hopefully with your care it stop having them. Please keep us updated.

Hi, thanks for your input. It has improved, although is still 'sticky' sometimes. Is there something I can do to treat it if there is a parasite?

One thing I can suggest is to go to the pet store and purchase avian medication. Depending on where you live, it could run anywhere from $10 and I have seen it as high as $40. I also suggest that you try a product called Benebac Plus. They do sell other BeneBac products, but the "Plus" is meant for our wildlife friends, it's a probiotic. You could probably call any vet in your area and see if they carry it. Again, depending where you live, the cost may vary.

I think I've seen a similar product at the pet store, think it was $30. I'm wondering if I should buy a worming product? I'm concerned it may do harm if there is no worms. I'll look into medication.
