Wood
Is balsa wood safe for birds? I have seen it on a few bird toys but is it really safe?

Re: Wood
I buy balsa wood sold in a bag of odd shapes at Michaels and Hobby Lobby. My budgies have a blast shredding it to bits. They prefer chewing up the softer balsa wood to the harder types of wood that are in their toys, which has little evidence of chewing. I just wedge the balsa wood pieces between the bars and they go to town. Been giving them the balsa wood for almost a year now and my avian vet says it's fine.

Re: Wood
Balsa wood is a soft wood, that shreds rather than splinters, making it a good chew toy even for little birds. It will get even softer when wet. It is not toxic.
