Re: Hot Feet

Hi! If Piccard is not holding his wings out and panting.. and looking skinny.. he's probably normal temperature. Hot feeties on tiels (when all other indications show that they are normal body temp) usually means your cockatiel is content. :-)

Re: Hot Feet

It's fine if they feel warm, or hot . The only time it could be a problem is if he is also acting sick.

Re: Hot Feet

Also remember that it depends on the tempreture of your own hands! Your hands may sometimes be warmer than Picards feet, and therefore his feet will feel cooler. But usually tiels feet feel warm as their body temp is a little higher than ours. Don't fret if they feel cool though, stop and think if your hands are quite warm, and think about the weather and such too. Just like sometimes YOUR feet may be cold, they can get cold feet too. Feet are extended out from their body, so are effected more by outside tempretures than the rest of their bodies, and so they change temp alot more than any other part.

Always take it into consideration with other clues. Like fluffed feathers/wings out/ panting/ hunching, etc. If they feel too warm/cool, then take careful note of it and watch him like a hawk. If the tiel is too warm/cool, then he WILL show other signs of it than just hot or cold feet! If tiels get too hot or cold, their body will start trying to fix it. Either by holding their wings out, slicked feathers, panting etc to get cool, or fluffing up, hunching down and shivering to get warm.

I assume their veins are the same as ours, in that the ones near the skin will expand in warmer weather and conrtact in cooler weather. The idea being that when the weather is warm they need to stay cool, and exposing more blood to the surface near the skin (by expanding the blood vessals (SP) there) will help cool it. But when it's cold they'll want to conserve heat and have less blood affected by the cooler outside skin temp..... Does that make sense?

Also remember birds can't sweat! so their beak and feet are the best places to do the blood vessel thing to help control body temp.

Aren't bodies amazing things!!!

Re: Hot Feet

Aaah, happy warm feet feeling! Also, don't you love how, when they've been sleeping, one foot is always so much warmer than the other?!
I always know by Harley's feet what kind of mood he's in - warm feet = happy birdy. Cold feet = WATCH OUT, may bite!!
