Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill

I know it's been discussed before but I just saw it last night (tried to get Barney to watch but he didn't seem very interested!) and am wondering if anyone on here has a cherry head conure. I've nver heard anyone talk about them. Blue crowns, yes, but not the cherry heads. Also, my husband said this morning, "how many kinds of conures can there be?" I told him a lot, but I really don't know the answer and I'm sure someone on here does. These are the ones I could think of:

Nanday
Sun
Jenday
Blue Crown
Cherry Head
Green Cheek
Gold Cap
Peach Front
Black Cap

Re: Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill

Oh, golden conures are wonderful! You actually have to have a permit to own them. And, I think they're being classified as macaws now. There's a bird only store I go to sometimes(it's kind of far away) and they have a golden that lives in the store. It belongs to someone who works there. The owner also breeds them I think. The conure is the sweetest thing!! It's just so sweet, lets you do anything to it.

Why do you have to have a permit? What other birds require a permit?

I think it's because they're endangered? I'm not possitive though. I'm not sure what other birds need a permit to own... Maybe a palm 'too?

Re: Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill

there are a lot more conures!

conure is a pet term, all are types of south american parakeets related to other parrots in the arini sub group (macaws, conures, amazons, caiques, pionus, and more). from wikipedia:
Arini

Re: Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill

i loved that movie. what is awesome about where i live is that there are flocks of green conures, red head amazons and double yellow head amazons. it is awesome to walk outside of a store and see a flock of fifty fly over your head. i wish i had the time to try to get to observe them more closely

I am not sure what other types require permits, but it is because the species is quite endangered. They are therefore not readily available in the pet trade.

I think they are the most beautiful of the conures. :-)

Re: Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill

btw, i am meeting (and sitting for) a member of the wild flock friday!

paco cannot rejoin the flock as he is disabled, but many rescuers in the bay area have taken them in when they hurt themselves. ill be sure to take pix of paco and his new flock (all other species) soon!

Re: Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill

i get to visit today & will take pix. even though it's a crazy busy day, i am looking forward to it, mainly because...

...paco is such a stunning bird. i never really thought cherry heads were that pretty, but paco's eyes are so expressive. s/he says hello, and stepped up for me (although due to the neurological problems s/he had, it makes it more difficult for her/him that other birds). and guess what? s/he is up for adoption (this is a foster!)... uh oh!

another bird at this client's home also had me gaga- a little maroon bellied conure with no upper beak. she never left my person the whole prelim visit. she kept exploring me with her tongue and making cute whisper noises.

Re: Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill

here are pix of paco, a refugee of the wild flock. he is a pet sitting client of mine. the reason he is in a home instead of with his flock, is he suffered from the strange neurological disorder that some of the flock came down with. it is unclear how they got it, but it is not contageous. poisoning is suspected.

he could not walk or perch for almost a year, and now can perch, but has some mild mobility issues. he now sleep in a tent, but gets around OK. he is a real sweetie- and i LOVE his eyes. i never though cherry heads were that pretty, but paco is stunning. his red plumage, his soulful eyes, and his cute tiny "hello" really captured my heart.
