Air Purifier

Anyone have this one or know of anyone that does and do you/they like it? It has a on/off for the ionizer which is good since it is bad for birds. It would be left on off.

Re: Air Purifier

Looks like a pretty good air purifier to me- but I know nothing about them. I'm sure it will do its job without any problems.

Re: Air Purifier

looks great, but i think you're paying for the ionizer! i think you can get one tons cheaper if you're just concerned with filtering the air. i have a little one from Holmes that cost me $40, and they have bigger ones too. just take a run to Target or Walmart...

Re: Air Purifier

Interesting post. I'm thinking of getting a bird this year and we have an air purifier that has an ionizer. What is bad about the ionizer for birds?

Re: Air Purifier

Personally, I wouldn't get the one you are considering. The optional ionizer is not a feature you will want to use; the EPA recommends against ionizers.

We just bought this Honeywell Unit, which relies on a HEPA filter and lacks an ionier:
http://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-5025...3159431&sr=8-3

From what I have read, there are better units on the market if you have $400+ to spend. As this investment is out of our price range right now, we figured we'd give this one a spin. Reviews are Amazon.com and consumer reports seem to like it. This review is also quite positive.

So far it works well. My husband reports less "gunk" in this throat since we got it. However, we've only had it for a couple of days, so the jury is still out.

Basically, ionizers make the air seem fresher. However, most of them also produce ozone. Higher ozone levels have some good effects (like boosting mood). But higher ozone levels can also harm your lungs. The EPA and Consumer Reports have been recommending that consumers avoid ionizers for this reason.

Since birds have more sensitive respiratory systems, they are probably at least as susceptible to being negatively affected by increased ozone levels as we are.

Re: Air Purifier

Our Honeywell unit makes a strong air-rushing sound, particularly on "high." I don't find the sound bothersome, and both my husband and I have slept with it next to our bed. But it would be too loud for a light sleeper. I'd turn it off while watching TV.

It also has a fairly high energy usage--170 watts on high. If you buy a Rabbit Air (They are $400) of the same strength, it uses something like 20 Watts. Something to know.

Re: Air Purifier

Is this harmful to the birds?
