Our first year is ending and we would like to thank everyone who has been so supportive of our efforts to keep PDD research funded. Avian Health Network, Inc. was able to send a check this month to Companion Animal Emerging Disease Group; Psittacine Disease Research at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Ritchie called us right away to thank everyone who has been so supportive of our campaign and was very grateful to everyone. AHN would also like to add that it has been wonderful this past year seeing just what the avian community can do when we all pull together for our birds and help to fight PDD! Thank you so much!
AHN is excited to announce the following changes to our advisory board in our coming new year! AHN would like to congratulate Matthew S. Johnston, VMD on his new position as Assistant Professor of Exotic Animal Medicine at James L. Voss Veterinary teaching Hospital, Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO. Dr. Johnston will be working with Terry Campbell, DVM, PhD., Associate Professor of Exotic Animal Medicine. Dr. Johnston played a major role in our first year by helping us with the technical information that has been published to www.StopPDD.org,, such as reviewing and helping to revise the PDD FAQ. We wish Dr. Johnston all the best in his new position and look forward to his continued help and support in the coming year.
AHN is pleased to welcome Jeleen Briscoe, VMD to our Advisory Board. Dr. Briscoe, currently a Resident in Special Species at the University of Pennsylvania's (U.P.) Matthew J. Ryan Small Animal Hospital, earned a BA in Psychobiology from Yale University prior to receiving her VMD from U.P. She has also spent time working at Baltimore's National Aquarium and the Avicultural Breeding and Research Center in Florida.
Dr. Briscoe specializes in special species medicine with an emphasis in surgery and critical care, and she is especially interested in how behavioral issues in parrots may be related to systemic diseases. She is a past president of the University of Pennsylvania Vet School's Special Species Club, and in 2001 she won the Association of Avian Veterinarians' Student Manuscript Award for her research entitled "Non-Medical Risk Factors for Feather Picking in Pet Parrots." Dr. Briscoe is married and the proud parent of a ringneck parakeet, a cat and two pit bulls.
We know that times are hard right now for many that want to help support PDD research but are unable to make cash donations. There are many different ways you can help other than by cash donations, or making purchases from our Online Store. We need volunteers who can offer to donate time each month to help post the newsletter; write articles for the website, donate graphics, and work with your bird club on getting information out about PDD. We also need help working information booths at trade shows and fairs this coming year that have been donated to AHN for StopPDD. Please visit the www.StopPDD.org section "Making it Work" for ideas on how you can help, or contact us at volunteer@StopPDD.org for more information, or to make a suggestion.
Avian Health Network has been given the opportunity to make a screensaver CD of our birds! While it will take some time to complete, we need some great pictures in order to make this happen. If you have any pictures you would like to share, please send them to Steffanie@StopPDD.org.
Proceeds generated by the StopPDD campaign will go to help subsidize the research of the Emerging Diseases Research Group (EDRG) at the University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine.
